I'm trying on a new Black Pearloid pickguard on my Big Al 5-H.

I'm not digging it as much as I do the Tortoise Shell that I just took off it.

Just put the Tortoise Shell back on it.

Hey Thornton,

I like the tort way better. It extends the rosewood value/color from the fretboard and divides the space of the bass into two main chucks of color (neck/pickguard + body/wings). The black pearl brings in a third value and jumbles it up too much.

It's all about the proportions.

After some experimenting, I found a good string setup - using Power Slinky for the B and E, and regular Slinky for the A, D, G. The tension feels balanced - keeping the E and B nice and taut.

So that's 135, 105, 80, 65, 45
