Musicman going in the wrong direction!!!

I don't hate the nut for no reason... the holes that are suppost to help are a cheap rason for EB to say their basses are better... the holes are claming that each string enters the nut at a diff. place inproving intonation, well each strings enters at the front of the nut and leaves at the end so, don't know what to tell you!

Oh, yeah, you mean the end that you play on? Oh, of course it makes no difference then. If it were on the side that the tuning pegs were on, then they'd be doing it right.

/sarcasm

But saying that it's bad advice is a stretch. It's like lifting weights. People do it in different ways, but there's proper technique to avoid injuries. Same thing happens with playing bass, and if you want to avoid tendinitis and carpal tunnel syndrome you should float your thumb and keep your wrist straight...

But you telling him to change his tech, espciallay in a non tech treead is just as bad. How come the greater part of the bass playing world do not use Willis's odd technique, or floating in general, and don't have carpal tunnel, tendinitis etc.

The part of your post I bolded, is very true, but not as you mean, floating done right is great, floating done wrong is worse than planting, same with planting, you just have to do it right.

If normal planting tech was so dangerous, it wouldn't be the standard.

And, FWIW, I use a hybrid of planting and floating, amongst a few other techs, I'm not actually anti floating.

Well their new nut is crap every string enters at th same place and all it has is a little triangle cut out under where the string comes outta the nut, which is what makes it look fancy. Another thing is there is no gap between the screws for the pickup, where I rest my thumb on 01' sterling!!! And it osn't just a strait edge but a ramp so your thumb slides off durring heavy playing.
.:bassist:

Tommygun, I know people are kind of jumping on you, but here's the problem. You called the new nut crap just because you don't understand it. If the nut had been installed improperly, didn't hold the string in place, or was made of some really cheap material, we'd understand you calling it crap. It isn't, though. It's a pretty sophisticated little device.

The comments about the pickup edge and anchor point are personal issues about the ergonomics of the bass. That's cool, everyone has personal preferences on these kinds of issues, but don't expect everyone to agree.

To me, your post reads like a guy ranting and raving. People generally don't respond well to that. If your post had been more like " I don't understand the new nut, can someone explain it," and "the new pickup design leaves me without my preferred thumb anchor point," I don't think people would be giving you a hard time.

Anyway, enjoy the bass you have. It's cool that your dad takes such an interest in your playing.

I'd say at least 60% of my anchoring bass playing friends have some kind of problem in their wrists or tendons...

Floating is standard amongst the new generation that doesn't play rock...

hhhmmm...I never heard of this floating thumb business....
I rest my thumb. If I get carpal tunnel, tendinitis, etc. it'll be from my job, not from playing bass. As a matter of fact, I have all of those already, so who cares if I rest my thumb or not?

But there is one thing that I just don't get about the original post.
The bass was a EBMM StingrayV, sienna burst as fender calls it but I'm not sure what MM calls it but I'm sure what I'm talking about... anyways it has a black guard and black pbass knobs. THIS THING WAS PURE SEX!!! I hate Vs with a passion but I will get this bass no matter what!!!

If you hate V's with a passion...why would you get one? Get a 4-string in the same color...

You clearly do hate it for no reason, and they didn't charge you extra for a compensated nut. Nor is anyone leaping about, screaming that the "new" nut has improved the instruments by leaps and bounds.

And while someone may tell you that you don't need a thumbrest or that they don't install them at the factory, there is nothing to keep you from installing one yourself. I find the beveled edges on the pickups work fine when I want to anchor my thumb, but I've seen more than a few EBMMs with aftermarket thumbrests and, so far, neither God nor Sterling Ball has struck anyone down for it. It's your bass. Make it comfortable for YOU.

But a bit less ranting and a little more information would have been helpful. I understand you're a teenager; even so, grammar and concise writing is so terribly useful.

Good luck with that bass if you like it and if you own it and...I really don't know if you do, actually.

See? Information is GOOD.

Well I understand the nut, I guess it just wasn't doing it's job. I'd love to play an EBMM that the nut worked!!! And I do enjoy my bass very much!! It's an 01' EBMM Sterling fretless in sunburst!!! WHATS NOT TO LOVE!!!

Sorry for coming out at you hard I just like the old nut better but I think this nut may not have been doing it's job so I'd be more than glad to go back and try out another EBMM with a working nut and get back to y'all bout what I think!!!

And I don't own the bass but it plays like a dream... better than any fretted bass I've ever tried, And I've tried basses way more expensave than that (Rics and ritters)!!! But My sterling fretless IS the best bass I've ever played!!!

I hate all Vs but this one and I didn't buy it

This:

You shouldn't be resting your thumb anyway...
Not sure if I understand this post...

Can only be topped by this:

Yeah, but not having my bass in the best shape it could be in bothers me... I went insane when my nut broke (on my sterling) so I went out that day cut like 5 lawns and got my mom to take me to the music shop and get the nut fixed. And with the pup... I decided I wouldn't just get a new one because the stock pup is so growly, so I'd get a chizel and knock that ramp thing off then sand it down, just like old LOL

Oh yeah I forgot the bass was an HS and had a maple fingerboard

Honorable mentions:

I don't hate the nut for no reason... the holes that are suppost to help are a cheap rason for EB to say their basses are better... the holes are claming that each string enters the nut at a diff. place inproving intonation, well each strings enters at the front of the nut and leaves at the end so, don't know what to tell you!

I guess I'm just old and cranky. :scowl:

I'm not entirely sure if I'm pleased to have read such an entertaining thread or annoyed that I'll never get the time back.

Another point to the thumb rest argument: players that use a pick 95% of the time (like myself), may not appreciate a little stub of plastic being in the way.

I'm just proud to be part of such a win thread :D

And while someone may tell you that you don't need a thumbrest or that they don't install them at the factory, there is nothing to keep you from installing one yourself. I've been looking for this operation on my ATK. I don't want to drill holes as it could be an issue in case I ever sell the bass. Don't think super-glue is either an option.

If there were pre-drilled holes and screws covering the area up. And the bass could arrive with a modern thumbrest, that would be a piece of detail that makes such instruments different from other ones. Or constant refinement, something Japanese and European companies are famous for.

A little bit similar as some Ibanez models (SRX) that have a nice placement for thumb on their mic guards...

You have me utterly confused here...

First you say:

...I just like the old nut better but I think this nut may not have been doing it's job s

Then you say:

And I don't own the bass but it plays like a dream... better than any fretted bass I've ever tried, And I've tried basses way more expensave than that (Rics and ritters)!!!

So the bass plays great - what exactly is the nut NOT doing??? Is it that it looks funny and that *really* bugs you?

after you replace that nut with a standard one, i'll take it off your
hands if you want. i'll put it on my '89 sr5....

No you won't, not without a little surgery to your bass. That new compensated nut is wider, and your fretboard would have to be widened at the nut. I would not even consider doing this to my 92. That new nut certainly doesn't hurt anything, and as Jack mentioned it costs no extra, but IMHO it's more gimmick than improvement. If you realy gotta have one though, no need to wait for the OP, I think EB will sell you one directly. Give em a call.
