Hmm...I always thought the Sabre was Alnico. I know the neck pickup on the classics is a 16 pole piece layout as opposed to the bridge pickup, which is 8-pole, similar to a Stingray. It's definitely a different voice from the Stingray 5's and Sterlings I've had in the past.

Me too - I have no idea either way. In the end it sounds good, so I applaud whatever magnets were chosen.
Just put on a new set of Cobalt Flats on the Sabre. They do a great job in mellowing and beefing up the slap tone of the Sabre, before they deaden out. I've been lucky, though, to have my Cobalts last for a good 2-3 months before they are useless in the slap department.

Reluctantly,had to sell the Sabre? Was trying to sell a couple of bass guitars,to recoup funds. Wasn't getting any cash offers,mostly trade offers. So am relinquishing my member #23,back to twistd,if he is still wanting it back? I actually am shipping to Switzerland. I offered it to a couple club members,no takers? So off to a foreign land.

Incoming 1980 Sabre. I've never played one or really ever paid attention to them. This one jumped out at me and I actually had some cash. Boom!

I just got my new 1989 back from the shop after a full setup, fret dressing, etc., so thought I'd take some better pics:
Mister PG, you is correct! 1.5" and not unlike a 70's Jazz profile. I am a Sabre noob, how common is this? It was immediately comfortable for me and as a whole unit it's very alive unplugged. I've got a ways to go being as comfortable with the preamp in this though. Some completely worthless sounds are made available so I'm narrowing it down. I have strings on the way and I'll have this apart and take some pix. It's a refin, it must have been a color before maybe I'll find some traces.
It's uncommon. Standard nut width was 1 5/8", like mine. Still very comfy though. Oh yea, these are live basses. You'll find that phase switch useless. Not even sure why they did that. The bright switch is much more useful. As an active bass, it's very musical. I prefer actually just running the bridge pup soloe'd which can get from quite hi-mid stingray'ish biting to more P bass-ish. Slappers would find the neck pick up solo'ed fun to play with. Without a pup blend knob, you're kind of at the mercy of both pups when both are selected, but with a combination of the bright switch and the 2 band, there are some useful tones in there. Tom, I have to admit, though, not a fan of the pickguard on yours, aftermarket I'm guessing. Standard on that natural like mine was a black pg. Never saw that color pg on a Sabre.
It is definitely 1.5". Never occurred to me that it might be a refinish. The brass nut is definitely not stock, but I particularly liked that mod, since my Alembics have brass nuts. The pickguard is custom from pickguardheaven.com
