Bass looks great! I always liked the sunburst finish. @BigDrew is correct; the "Sledge" finish is a metalflake that changes in different light & comes with a letter of authenticity from Tony Levin. He used this bass on Peter Gabriel's tour a few years back on the tune "Sledgehammer"....hence the name.

Incoming!!!
Got this Sabre in a trade from a fellow TB'r.
According to him, it's an '87 neck on a '98 body? I think? I dunno, but the neck is to die for. Sounds cool so far. I've never been a fan of active electronics on a bass and am not sure this bass will convert me, but time will tell :) Plays like a dream though and certainly looks the business as far as I'm concerned!

Looks like an pre-EB Neck with a replaced fretboard and probably an EB (mid 80s) Body.

The Ernie Ball Sabres (Classics aside) were build until 1991. (The last ones had the trussrod wheel).
Matching headstock wasn't an offical option. The fretboard could be replaced, looks like pearl dots - instead white.
Logo looks more like a pre EB. String retainer in the pre-EB position. EB dome knobs.

Understood! The seller was told this info, which has been up for scrutiny...I honestly don't know enough about em to say. The neck is insanely good..just love the shape. It also sounds nice. I'm grateful for any factual info. The string tree doesn't jive either, but since I love the bass, I'm not sweating it...would be interesting to know though!

Took my new (to me) Sabre to a preproduction rehearsal earlier. Used my Mesa M9 and a DIY cab I made for myself. Man, it's a really nice sounding and playing bass. Like a beefier, punchier J bass. Incredible note definition and I didn't really mess with it much. The M9 was set up with all tone controls at noon and no parametric engaged. Just used the onboard stuff for very minor adjustments. Off to a good start!

The decal and string tee (and its placement) cannot be original of a 87 MM Sabre neck.
It does not mean it is not a good neck.
