EVERY Stingray, EVER... should be jealous.
Ok bad news.....took it to my luthier and we both cried. Neck is unsalvageable
spare neck anyone?
A lot of times luthiers are afraid to take on work when they're not sure of the results. There's a music man thread of a guy in Germany who took matter in his own hands and repaired a pre ernie Stingray neck with seemingly similar problems as yours. It was a lot of work but the result seems satisfying.

You could always replace it with something like this:
Status Graphite. The finest hand-made graphite basses and guitars. Made in England.
That won't work with a Pre-EB Sabre. Their necks are a different width where they meet the body. (I wish I could be more specific with the exact width, but all my stuff is packed to move). I had to have a replacement neck custom made for my '79 Sabre about 20 years ago. I was fortunate enough to pick up an actual '80 pre-EB Sabre Neck a few weeks ago, so now I'm planning to sell the custom neck. Here's a shot of the head, with the maker's name obscured so the Devil Dogs from Music Man won't go after him!

I dont know if this is legal to do in this thread, and if its not mods please delete, or let me know and Ill remove. Its just alot easier to ask in the sabre club than in the classifieds, does any one of you guys have a black guard you would want to trade for a clear or mint green one?

With due respect, my experience was completely different. I had absolutely no problems putting a Status Graphite Music Man replacement neck on my '79 Sabre. I mean, it was not a "perfect, super tight" fit, but I certainly didn't need to do any mods, or shim it in order to mount it. It sounded FANTASTIC, especially with some Fender flats. The only reason it's not still on the bass is because a jealous/covetous friend made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Haha! It's now on his Stingray.

Same thing happened with my stingray, I steamed the skunk strip out, took the old truss rod out (it was broken) , ,got a new rod, re-threaded for the nut and anchor, put the new rod in, a new ash skunk strip back in. All good as new ! In your case the rod is not broken, just take the rod out and re-thread more threads.!
Hi guys, I am Andreas from Germany and a real happy Sabre user since two weeks now. I was very lucky to find a pretty nice left-handed Pre Ernie Ball Sabre built in march 1980. It is a great player and really light weighted. Barely 4kg. So I would like to apply, getting a member of this club, and hope to meet the requirements
