so i tend to tilt mine a little bit, so ill give you the measurements of each screws height
all of these are measured with the last fret pressed down(eliminating the neck from the equation)
from the top of the pickup to the bottom of the string
first pickup
top screw 7/64
bottom screw 9/64
bottom pickup
top screw 9/64
bottom screw 11/64
without pressing down the last fret those are from the top of the pickup to the bottom of the string
neck pickup
top screw 7/32
bottom screw 15/64
bridge pickup
top screw 12/64
bottom screw 15/6
the two pickups are definitely equal in output with the bridge being a tiny bit stronger, the trouble is that peoples conventional understanding of a neck pickup is that the neck pickup will always have more output than a bridge pickup so they'll set them way lower in the bass than they need to! the bridge and neck pickup on that bass are radically different designs and the 16 pole piece neck pickup is designed to not be prone to chorus warble sound when its put close to the strings. if you want a rounder sound, you can totally put it even closer than my settings, i used to have it at 4/32 from the pickups with the string pressed down on the last fret

UPDATE: It's been about 9 months. I've learned a lot, and my Sabre will make its live debut on Halloween night! My dad band is playing a U2 cover set that night and I'm fired up!

All I'm gonna say is... check out my avatar. I bought a Classic and almost immediately sold it. It was an awesome bass. But... well... yeah.
If anyone is looking to sell a Sabre Classic / rosewood board = let me know - thanks! I have a 2013 natural / rw board....looking for another one in sunburst, white, silver or other color but natural.
I would imagine the L2000 sounds great as well. I am just drooling over the birds eye and flame neck options I've been seeing. I will research more

Funny. That's some major "sleuthing." The Sunburst one is a closet queen." It sat in it's case, un-played for over 30 years. As a matter of fact, it still had the original strings on it when it arrived. My Nephew now owns this bass.

New pickups and bridge in the 80s just before the switch to Ernie Ball branding
I didn't really care for the look. I chose that wood (Sapelle, I think) partly because it's what I had in a larger size veneer and the color kind of matched the vintage maple of the neck. The black really looks best on that mocha/ walnut body. I tried dying it black, but it just didn't turn out well enough to even put it on the bass, it just turned the wood dark brown instead of black. Maybe if it were a stabilized & dyed black burl might look kind of cool, but finding a tank that size to stabilize would be a challenge. Here's a shot of it before I dyed it.

I'm new to this forum and am considering to offer a trade for a 97' Sabre. Is there anything special about a 97' Sabre?
