"Sounds" like dead battery, but you say you put a fresh battery in. I'd double check the battery just to make sure.

If the battery is fresh, my next guess is output jack. +1 to learning how to use a soldering iron, or have a friend do it. Easy fix, the jack is only a couple bucks.

I did have an EBMM with a bad solder connection in the pre once though.

So:
1) double check battery
2) output jack
3) call EB about a new pre.

Sometimes the battery pins don't make proper contact with the battery. Make certain there's enough spring pressure on the battery clip there to make contact. I would clean everything too, use a q-tip and clean the contacts in the jack.

If worse comes to absolute worse, and the preamp is indeed bad, I was told a new factory supplied replacement costs about $75 bucks with trade-in of your old unit.

Check the jack. Mine wore out after a while. It have a weird distortion sound. It was about a $100 repair including parts and labor.

You got ripped off hard if you spent that much to repair a jack. The jack should only cost about 5 bucks, and it only takes about 5 minutes to change if you know what you're doing. $5 parts + $95/ 5 minutes labor.... Time to find a new repairman or learn how to use a soldering iron.

The nerve some guys have, charging people that much...
