I get what you're saying, but isn't it possible that if she was a mature professional with the drive to succeed (and that didn't ultimately storm out of the room), she would've stayed for the rehearsal and explained her vision/sound/musical goals to the group of old farts that are supposedly picking on her?

As a point of edification, this is the kind of singing most young women are trying to emulate right now. If we remove our prejudices about whether we personally think this sort of singing is good or bad, and simply follow the money, we can possibly make some guesses about why the older singer and band thought this young woman wasn't up to the task, and why they might have been wrong about that.



A singer with a large enough following to attract the attention of a management company and label might just be doing something with money potential, and might not need Ethel Merman or Mariah Carey to show them the light.

But again, we're all just speculating.

you don't have to be a musician in order to:
- read the room effectively.
- assess the abilities and sensibilities of the 'major players' in the room.
- understand 'your place' in a roomful of other actors.
- look for ways to better your 'position' in the room.
- make the room 'a better place' because you were there.

the way i read the OP's comments = 19 y.o. wasn't experienced enough, the band wasn't experienced enough for the task at hand, "mangement" was not engaged enough to mitigate the developing 'dynamic' process, and the outcome was about as expected.

Problem is none of the American Idol "stars" except for Kelly Clarkson are big names. I guess they learned their lesson with Clarkson and now everyone else is under contract with American Idol Inc. They can't sign on with anyone else or they'll be in breach of contract. Prostitution comes in many forms. That just my $0.02.

I think the thing that experienced people lack most is the humility to learn from, or humbly help, people who are newer to the game. I've learned as much from people 30 yrs younger than me as I've been able to teach them. Probably more. I think its a very big part of the reason why at age 61 I continue to move forward in the game. I love what I do and earn more doing it than I ever have in my life. Playing to people I could be a grandparent to, also .

I usually rub in the other direction when I audition for a band of older musicians with a young, especially young female, singer. Especially if that younger singer is the child of the band leader. You’re just a means to an end and the drama is relentless. Have done that before and see it going on with some people I know. It’s pathetic, especially when they are vicariously using their kids to fulfill their fantasies of fame.

It’s a far longer list, including greater successes, if you factor those who appeared on these shows in other countries. In fact the U.S. versions aren’t even the original iterations of these shows.

I was in an originals band once. Well, we practiced, but hadn't made it out of the practice room.
Suddenly we were 'involved' with a model-turned-singer doing Europop. Money started pouring in from dubious sources (Older, well dressed gentlemen with Mediterranean features), and an album was being cut by the keyboard player/BL and the singer. Nobody else really involved aside from me tracking some guitar parts. We were told we would be his backing band when the tour started.

I left around this point (having heard some horror stories about swarthy, well dressed gentlemen become involved with bands).
Next thing, an album comes out (with a marginally 'successful' Euro single) that appeared to be the keyboard player/BL doing all the heavy lifting, and doubling the singer's voice most of the time (and some very early autotune software massaging). Then...nothing. Album barely made a dent in the charts.
But 'management' wanted the singer to be a star, so that's what they got. He did some TV appearances miming in the studio, but there was never a backing band.

OP is absolutely correct in not caring if they're picked up or not. Management + Diva = trouble.
