MY BEAT BUDDY IS HERE!

Sorry, I should have mentioned I was demoing it through headphones.

It's ok as drum machines go, but it's no Superior Drummer.

Having gigged with drummers (good and bad), drum machines, and sequencing software, I agree that the Beat Buddy is no Superior Drummer----- I don't think it was meant to be.

It is a great tool---- I'll try to learn how to use it. Kudos to the inventors. I would not call this device a "drum machine".

You guys, due to a huge coincidence, today is looking like it will be Double NPD for me with two pedals I have been waiting longer for than anything.

If I don't post by midnight, please call the cops as I have likely died (or passed out) due to anticipation.

Same here! Cam home this morning to the BeatBuddy waiting for me and getting my Octavius Squeezer later on! (fun day of wiring ahead!)

It has arrived. Unfortunately, I have to keep working. Play time later.

Couldn't focus on work with an unopened box next to me.
Fun pedal. Build quality is great. Foot switch is handy. Very intuitive user interface over all. So happy to hang out with a drummer that won't lead me into trouble. :smug:

For those wondering... midi sync with a Boomerang III+Sidecar was easy. Seems to work great. This is also my first time doing anything with midi, so take that for what it is worth.

The sounds samples from the pedal are great. I am going to have to figure out how to program my
own beats and load them into the pedal, and the included booklet says that is doable. So far I am impressed with this product. Seems super easy to use with insertion of fills on the fly. I'd also like to figure out how to bypass the intro fills and get right to the beat. I'm sure that is doable with the software.

Yes, you can get rid of the intro fills with the software (which we've ALMOST completed!). A temporary workaround for skipping the intro fill is to start the song and immediately pause it. When you unpause the beat, it will start from the first song part without the intro.

I've been traveling all week and just had a chance to unpack and listen to the BB. Very impressed with the quality of the sound files. The jazz beats are really nice because no drum machine I've owned in the past has provided such nice swing samples on demand. It's a little annoying having to wait for a genre of songs to load from the SD card and I wonder if loading these onto an internal chip would have made switching instantaneous. Everything is a trade off, I suppose. That's a minor complaint. Overall I'm impressed. Won't get a chance to do a major shakedown for a while but it's nice to get a device like this up and running with minimal hassle. Most pedals are a royal pain to operate. This one is fairly intuitive.

Had a chance to play with it earlier today. I was an infidel---I only played guitar with it due to reasons having to do with cables.

First impressions:

PROS:
---The user interface is full of win. Not that it needed to be complicated, but David & Co. absolutely knocked it out of the park.
---While I was playing I thought the drums sounded really good (i.e., mixed with other instruments).
---The range of styles and drum sets was really cool. I didn't get to explore all of them, but there were a lot of cool sounds.
---Overall simplicity of use was great.
---Lots of fun to add fills.
---The stop/start function was something I didn't expect to use when it was announced, but it's actually really cool.

CONS:
---While I was NOT playing (i.e., no other instruments) I could maybe see the complaints with the sound quality. I didn't think it was bad, but I also wasn't blown away. Of course, I was using it through a medium-quality-at-best guitar amp. I didn't try headphones.
---I don't find the accent hits to be all that interesting. I would love some other options for the use of this footswitch in future firmware updates.
---The branded footswitch is nice looking, but it's a lot bigger than I think I realized. If I had to do it over again I might have gone with a custom-made third party one to save on space.
---Timing the fills and transitions is going to take a little bit of practice. Some fills are awkward.
---I felt like, on a "per style" basis, there wasn't as much variety as I was hoping for. I.e., you get a great sampling of all sorts of different styles, but I didn't immediately notice a ton of variety between, for example, the "rock" songs.

TBD:
---I would like to hear it through full range speakers.
---I didn't test any MIDI functionality.
---DAT SOFTWARE.

Overall, I'm very happy. Even though I put a long list of cons up there, there are minor compared to the pros. I obviously only scratched the surface today, and I'm looking forward to using the unit more and more.

You can change the function of the footswitch in the settings menu (press the drum set and tempo knobs at the same time). Feel free to suggest other functions for the footswitch :)

Yeah, I figured out how to do that. I already switched it to "song back" when not playing. I guess I'm thinking more of live performance options...if you ever support a third part for a song, for example. Or maybe there would be a way to pick which fill you wanted to use, and the footswitch could be a part of that. Or instead of fills, it could switch to a single drum until you clicked it again---a hi-hat click, or a four-on-the-floor bass drum.

Other footswitch function ideas:
Fade out
Half time
Cut time
Drum rolls, crescendos, or any other "break downs"

all great ideas! we'll have to think about implementation while still keeping it simple and easy to use.
