the Beatles had a pretty strong "musical personality" and anything with a strong personality is bound to be unappealing to some people. No big deal. But it does surprise me that anyone with a musical ear could not at least respect and admire some aspects of the Beatles' creativity.

i think with the beatles you are getting a cohesive group dynamic, a blending of influences, and little fear of experimentation, because they were so young, these guys were also influenced by the abstract expressionists in some respects, therefore they weren't afraid to push stuff and take risks

Reminds me of when I was in college. The Rolling Stones had jazz great Sonny Rollins play the solo on "Waiting on a Friend". I was jazzed about it and played it for my sax teacher thinking he would be impressed. His reply, "Meh, he probably just needed the money."

Totally OT (but relevant to this OT) -

My parents didn't listen to jazz
Non of my friends listened to jazz
It wasn't played on any stations (certainly non that I listened to)
I wasn't in a school jazz band (we didn't have one)
I don't own any jazz records/tapes/CDs/mp3s (that I know of)
So I have never been exposed to jazz

Yet I am still expected to like jazz. Now that I find mind boggling.

You certainly don't have to like anything at all. However it is a slippery slope from "I don't like X" (which is valid) to "X sucks"(which is not).

Jazz is such a massive massive genre that if you took the time to check it out you would find something that clicked for you eventually. Imagine if I had posted that I don't like rock. That would be insane.

As far as "mandatory to like jazz on TB" goes, of course it isn't, but if you want to improve at music you need to push yourself outside of your comfort zone. For a rocker, studying jazz or classical styles is a great way to accomplish this.

Not to get self-referential, but I'd earlier addressed the OP's Dad's comparison between the Beatles and the Motown guys. It dawned on me that the Motown session guys generally were 5-15 years older than the Beatles, who were born between 1940 and 1943:

So the Funk Brothers had a lot more playing time under their belts. And they were specialists, not distracted by writing, singing, publicity, etc…they just kept honing their craft and churning out those high-level tracks.

Net net - measuring the Beatles against the Funk Brothers is a false comparison. And believe me, that is not to detract from the Funkster's creativity in any way - they were amazing! But the Beatles had a far broader agenda.
