My Dirt Bender - Another Jounal

These are not the best times for the Dirt Jounal.
Reason one: I'm tracking tracks for the metal band, therefore have rigged my mad scientist test lab to resemble a humble home studio and pour in every spare minute to get a satisfying result.

Reason two:

I have no idea what this is and what it does, but feel a strong need to find out more about it.







In other news, I developed a mild interest towards playing with a pick. When I collected the P bass from the Hospital, I brought home a rather large selection of picks to try out in the comfort of my home, to see which does fit my hands and preferences. I'm not talking about tone yet - only about what works for me and what does not.
My prime goal is, of course, to properly learn how to play with a pick. As soon as that is handled, I can put said pick into my gig bag, so I have permanent access to it, and I will never use it.
The statement of not playing with a pick even though you can is much stronger than not playing with a pick because you never learned it properly.

It's like when someone shows up to play music with a Squier and claims that thing is pure fire. It's a much stronger statement when you know that person has two MiA Fenders at home and brings the Squier nonetheless.

The FMeron certainly is a very different beast. I don't understand FM synthesis at all. Every time I watch Zach Rizer explaining it in his FMeron video, by brain goes out for a cig and only comes back once he starts playing again.

However, I'm slowly beginning to understand things and can already make one or two good sounds that I can't create with the fuzz into envelope.

This is what I love about it. The type of synth tones available are not ones I'd ever been able to re-create with the "traditional" octave, fuzz, envelope combo. Or even get close to. As with most Iron Ether pedals, it's pretty easy to get into super whacky territory, but there are many musical sounds contained in that wee box.

Here is something noteworthy I just understood about the FMeron:
The envelope that is at work here will completely abandon its position and direction and jump back to the starting point every time a new note is triggered.
Playing legato does not change this. Every time the FMeron senses a new note, the filter sweep starts new. That opens up some now possibilities, and ruins others.

Without frequency modulation the waveform is just a pure sine wave (ie not having its waveform modulated by the second “modulator” waveform). In the case of the FMeron the envelope can be assigned to control the amount of FM, so that’s where your extra harmonic information is coming from when the envelope sweeps (this isn’t an envelope filter).

That makes a lot of sense!
So when I set the envelope and the FM knob to zero, I get pure sine waves.

I will have to sell some pedals yet again, and then I'll hopefully be, yet again, stuffed with cash that threatens to burn a hole in my pocket, so let's be prepared and compile a list of what's still out there.

Here are a few suggestions of pedals that exist in the real world, but not in the Jounal (yet):

-Ibanez PD7 Phat Head Bass Overdrive
-Crazy Tubes Planet B
-Kasleder Jellyfish
-Singular Audio Tubedrve
-EBS Multidrive

I was looking at transformer based overdrives in current production out of curiosity after reading the Bogner Wessex review and ran across the LAA custom CN81. I can find no information on whether it is good on bass or not, but I am intrigued.

Realistically I should try it myself, but then I have to convince my wife I should spend the money on something that I am not positive will be great, so I would prefer to offload that effort.

I just learned they exist.
Next thing I learned they are Italian.

In my book, Italians really know their food, their carbon fiber and their high quality audio products.

Now I want one, too!

As soon as I saw they had a whole line of transformer output pedals including an overdrive and a compressor I knew I had to get someone on talkbass to try at least one before I started harassing my wife about my pedal budget again.
