My Dirt Bender - Another Jounal

As to the Chorus Side Quest, I had to release a stream of words that will not pass the Talkbass rules and word filter.
Imagine an old school sailor who got his foot tangled in a rigging line while the sail went up and is now dangling upside down twenty feet up the mast and what he would say.

There are not that many pedal brands where I'd call myself a die-hard fanboy, but one if them is Effectrode. And Effectrode did make a pedal called the Vibra-Chorus, which comes in a gorgeous shell pink, and they are currently making and selling the evolved version named Tube Vibe, which is more of a bordeaux red and sports more knobs.

When I spotted these, something in me surrendered, and I proclaimed "The search is over. The hunt is on!" I think I found it, now I have to find one.
I've been interested in their Phaseomatic for a phaser, that can kinda do chorus if you dial it down. I love phasers, and a tube phaser, get outta town! The thing holding me back is the price and the real estate. It's a HUGE pedal for a novelty effect that I don't use much for gigs. But I bet it sounds awesome.

Didn't know the Vibe also did Chorus sounds, but I guess if you dial it down enough it can cop a decent chorus.

Interesting, thank you. When listening to online videos, I was thinking that it might be mid boost...
I'm able to get better and more useable tones from the Strom King than any of the Youtube videos. But I'm still puzzled by the shape control. I tend to keep it near minimum. The kick circuit is not dramatic, generally have it engaged. Right now, the Storm King into the DCX Bass is a nice combo.

One of these days, I'm gonna buy myself a Stingray or G&L and string it with fresh stainless steel rounds, just to explore pedals from that perspective, too ;-)

I do have the feeling that with rising gain, the Storm King can add a lot of treble through the harmonics, and if you feed it a signal with a solid top end, things may get bright.

I see you licked blood with the Bobs and like the taste, so you want to look at different implementations of two gain knobs on one pedal?
If my memory serves, the VB-2 felt like a very niche product that can take an essential role in a gain staging setup, but is not that great as a standalone dirt pedal. I'd say that you'll have to experiment on your own, because results will vary with signal chains.
A very astute assessment, as always 🙂👂. It’s interesting on its own; with the bias knobs both fully CCW (i.e. allowing the full voltage across whichever part/s of the circuit is/are gated), the volume controls are very clean, but their interaction does affect the EQ of the output signal, especially the relative strength of the mid frequencies, which in turn affects the character of the clipping, or perhaps more appropriately, starvation produced by the bias controls. I tried it at both 9 and 18 volts, and prefer it at 18 (fortunately, although I admit my own bias knob is turned up a little here, as the capacity to run under 18V was a selling point for me); the effect of the bias controls happens much earlier in their sweep at 18V, and the volume may be even a little cleaner or perhaps brighter.

I’ve jammed it onto my board after the Echo Fix compressor, running into the Benson Florist and the uni-vibe, then spring reverb (also Echo Fix), the Bobs (better at 9 than at 18 volts, as it happens). The biasing does change, presumably as a result of the low-impedance input coming after a buffer in the form of the compressor, but not for the worse, and it sounds great going into the uni-vibe, which is fast becoming my favourite modulation effect.

These are just some initial impressions, as it just arrived. If something surprising happens, I’ll be back.

...the uni-vibe, which is fast becoming my favourite modulation effect
It has always ever been thus for me. That true, optical pulse/throb is just cool as duck, and nothing quite matches it. At faster speeds and higher depth, it can do that choppy tremolo thing, which is also something I can't get out of any other modulation pedal. May have to consider chucking it back on one of my boards soon...

Univibe vs. Chorus.
Do you people think that a pedal that does a credible Univibe sound, but has the possibility to feed in dry signal, such as the Effectrode, might scratch my Chorus itch?

I've also seen that there is a one knob pedal out there that sounds great in demos, the Horrothia Type One - but Horrothia is currently out of stock
and some other German bassist snagged up the last one in the European used market from right under my nose.

In Chorus related news, I had a talk with someone who recently sold the AnalogMan for the same reason I ditched mine - the hiss with the deep switch engaged was too much, especially when using the pedal for a shimmery effect on quiet parts of a song. That same person also sold the Anadime a short while later - for the same reason. That's making me hesitate to get it in the first place.

There is one more chorus pedal that gets recommended frequently by those who have one, and that is the Tech21 Bass Boost Chorus.
JohnK even said it's his favorite (Does anyone know what happened to JohnK? I've seen his account is inactive and has been for a while).
I managed to find one and ordered it.

Back to the Echo Fix: I have the feeling that one possible scenario is this: There is a gap between what I need and what I think I need.
I said I'm not happy with how fast it is on the slowest setting.
The pedalboard I put this on is a snobbish cork sniffer's collection of what that particular cork sniffer (yours truly) deems the best there is to satisfy his cork sniffing habits, and therefore cannot abide having a pedal that is not 100% within the spec sheet.

When I play that EF chorus, It does sound great. It's not like a gently rolling tide, but more like rippled water in a pond fed by a small waterfall.
Every time I pick it up, it grows on me some more - and I start thinking that I might care more for the results and less for the exact means that get me there.
It certainly sounds nicer than Julia, which is a bit sterile at times, and the effect is not exactly strong on my worn strings, where I don't even need to max out the depth knob on the EF.

The current plan is to Check it against the Tech21 and see what happens. Maybe the Tech21 is what I want and that's that.

I don't know but I remember he was suspended a while ago when Nathan aka SushiBox was suspended, too.

In my very limited understanding, it could have to do with the platform's handling of commercial users and what kind of posts and interactions are disallowed for those — and how many warnings have been made. Just very wild guesswork on my part. Nathan might know more.

Discussing moderator business is not allowed either...

As long as it's something with moderators or policies .... I'm glad that nothing happened to him.

I've been on a Chorus kick before.

Tech 21 Boost Chorus: Great chorus, can get bright or dull with the tone knob, you can dial in how much chorus you want with the mix knob or go full vibrato, you can dial the chorus to be sharp or flat, they have a thickening setting in the manual which is the chorus set flat and mix set to like 2 o'clock. Volume/Boost knob is useful as Chorus sometimes needs a boost to cut through the mix. Main reason I don't have it on my board is that it is a big pedal with side jacks.

Horrothia Type One: Another great chorus, one knob for speed/intensity. It's not an in your face chorus, so you can use it more liberally. This is on my smaller board.

Iron Ether Polytope: This can get crazy seasick real fast, but dialed in, can get bright or dark by setting a LP or HPF on the Chorus. I like to set it so it doesn't affect the lowest sounds so I don't get a throb. I also like that instead of a mix knob, you have separate clean and chorus volume knobs. So you can set the clean to unity and boost the Chorus a bit to stand out of the mix.

Analogman Chorus: This is another great one, but can be noisy. I run it at 15v as that's what I read is the optimal voltage for it. The Deep switch is great for dialing in how much lowend you want chorus'd. Sadly no volume or way to boost, so it can disappear in the mix.

I've tried the Julia and didn't like to, something about the tone of the chorus. The Polychrome Flanger on the other hand I really liked and can do a decent chorus with the right settings, but just didn't use flanger enough to warrant a space on the board.

The Tech 21 Bass Boost Chorus was my trusty go-to for several years for chorusing and detune sounds. I mostly used detune in place of chorus, which that pedal does quite well- you can use both together too which is cool. I liked the tone and features much better than the IE Polytope I used to have (to me it was too cold sounding- to be fair this was an older Polytope and they have updated it in some ways since including adding tone control).
The Tech 21 is a digital pedal (how the static detune options are possible), but to me it sounds pretty analog. There is a some noise in my example (less for me than my Analogman though, and I find the Analogman totally acceptable for me in that regard), and the size and side jacks are pretty annoying (one reason it got kicked off my main board recently, which is pretty small). I’ve been on an Analogman kick recently, and my current band sounds great with actual chorusing from that pedal vs the detune I would have used from the Tech 21.

Comparing the Tech 21 and Analogman directly, I would say the Analogman can sound more deep and bold with its chorus tone and also sometimes punchier. I also hear an almost slap-back delay time from the Tech 21, it seems like the chorused tone has a longer delay time going on to my ears but hard to quantify exactly.

They’re quite different. Some choruses can get pretty univibe-ish, and I would put the Echo Fix in the group of those that can almost get there, but really only at one end of its spectrum. They feel really different, as much as anything, even if you’re getting a credible sound, as you say. A phaser with a mix knob might get closer still.

The Jam pedals stuff interests me. I’ve never played any of them, but their Waterfall sounds great from what I’ve heard. Everything they do seems to have side jacks, though, even their large enclosure pedals. But if you could live with that (and the box is smaller than the EF, so perhaps it could be made to work), it would be next on my list.

Forgot that I had the Jam Waterfall Bass at one time. It is also a great chorus, but no longer have it.

I agree, side jacks really grind my gears, even if something like the Horrothia One or EchoFix are bigger, I just prefer top jacks since that's what the rest of my pedals have. It rubs my OCD, which might not matter to others.

These are all great Chorus's and there isn't a right or wrong answer for any of them, totally dependent on your bass, other pedals, amp, and the type of music you are playing.

I just remembered I did a Chorus shootout a while ago when I had a bunch to compare, still have some of them, others have moved on.

I want to direct your attention to page nine of this thread, where I rant about the Lucydreamer's power plug position.

On the chorus front may I put the Keeley Seafoam+ on your radar. It packs a lot of options in a smallish pedal, though it is side jacks. Doesn't have the headroom problem my EBS UniChorus (original late 90s) had.
One problem you’ll never have with the Echo Fix is lack of headroom. It seems to be impossible to clip it. I’ve given it 40 dB of clean gain from my API LLX, and nary a whimper.

I don't know which pedal I used, but I wanted to see the clipping light come alive, so I fed it a maxed out pedal - I suppose it was either the Storm King or the Prunes & Custard, but it could have been something else - the red light came on, and it completely messed up everything before the comp, so I cannot say if it's sounding any different when clipping, but it took a fair amount of dB to get it there.
