My DP Pushic Custom fiasco........

john turner said:
i had too, but i would have to say that i preferred the dp to the wish. by a sizeable margin too. the wish was just unplayable. the dp was sorta ragged.

Heh, I found the Wish a lot more playable personally. It was a baseball bat of a neck to be sure, but dollar for dollar, I'd have bought the Wish. The Pushic was a more....ambitious build, but I'd say the Wish was closer to hitting the mark, I think.

Good to see ya, JT. :hyper: Haven't noticed you around much.

I was very close to ordering a bass from DP back when the craze was on. So glad I didn't do it now. I remember when Jeff Rader had his burl 6er up for sale here, too, and had talked to him about buying it. Glad I didn't do that either.

There are so many reputable builders out there with fairly reasonable prices that are putting out great instruments, why take the chance on one of these?? Personally, I would rather spend the extra $$ for a playable, well built bass, than save a few hundred and get something that is just firewood.

You can put together a pretty nice bass from Warmoth parts bought used for less than a cheap DP. I hope he is able to sort out his problems and raise the level of quality on his stuff, just from looking at pictures he appears to have some talent, it would be a shame for it to go completely to waste..

You know.....From all the Horror stories I've read/heard about DP, you think this guy would have no business.

I don't understand why people keep giving him their money and getting crap in return.

As for myself, I ordered my bass before I ever discovered TB, and I'm sure other people order basses from him who have never heard of TB. If I were a member beforehand, I would have certainly given Nino or Brian my business instead!!

I dont know what to do. I ordered one. I mean, hes given me tons of assurance and whenever I question him about the build quality, he gets offended. I just dont know what to do.

This is a good opportunity for this question to be answered. lamborghini98, I remember you posting in several threads about DP customs, and not taking heed of any of the warnings you were given. What made you decide to go for it? What made you decide to take Dave's word over the word of his customers?

I believe I can answer that. It's the word "custom" in combination with a good price. The word "custom" makes people think they're getting a one-of-a-kind creation made especially for them, even when they're not. Plus the guy's basses take a nice picture. And the good price tied in with it makes people think, wow! I'm getting a custom for such a good price! And they look around and they can't find anything comparable in customs at good prices, so they tell themselves that they will get a good instrument even when those other "morons" didn't. But the fact that an American Fender costs more than one of these so-called "customs" escapes them. And then when they get the bass, they're disappointed and pissed. "Hey, my bass is supposed to be custom and it looks and plays worse than a Carlo Robelli!" Well what did you expect for $700? A Ken Smith? A Fodera? Come on people, use your heads!

Well, it's like this: Back in '03 at the Atlanta get together, bassmonkeee was playing a Wish bass, and we were talking about Jeff Rader's burl DP 6er...bassmonkeee had played it at a local music store, and said he preferred the Wish.

I guess the qualty hasn't changed much in the last few years. I hoped it had improved.

He used "Bondo" to fill the gaps in the one I had as well. Simply amazing...

I do hear they burn pretty well, though...

Seems like every DP story is the same... "I hear bad things, but I'm sure if I give him time, and I don't push him, mine will come out fine!" and then, later "This is a pile of crap. However, Dave said he'd make it right." Then, "Dave said he made it right, but it's still crap."

Then, from the peanut gallery "Wow, I'm sorry your DP sucked. I hear bad things, but I'm sure if I give him time, and don't push him, mine will come out fine!" and then, later...

When are people gonna learn?
Amen.

It's kinda like catch and release, and get caught again, ...

Mine burned well...the wings did anyway...

why does Dave keep getting business ? Obviously there are people that find him without doing much research...i'm sure that if you google "DP Custom" some talkbass thead would come up. It appears that a majority of his customers must not be hip to us...

Of course i could be wrong.

4string4ever,

Uggh! Thanks for letting us know about your troubles.

Without question, your unfortunate experience with said party will surely educate and inform future buyers within the bass community to stay away from fraudulent luthiers that run such a shady business operation.

I have been dismayed by the negativity I've seen here about Dave since he's been a pretty standup guy thusfar, but I can no longer stand idly by. He now refuses do do any further work on my bass. I have contacted the BBB, and will also contact legal counsel if necessary.

A note to anyone considering purchasing a DP Custom;

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!

He had the bass picked up to fix this, and then when it arrived for the third time, I discovered that there now is more bend in the neck on the low side than on the high side. The low side shows some relief and the high side is straight. The more relief I apply, the worse it looks. He says it is fine, and will actually be better for the intonation and resonance of the lower register.

Holy carp...I missed the part where he actually said that a twisted neck is a good thing.

:hmm:

It's really a shame to hear these kinds of things, with both DP and Wish. Both of these builders have some pretty innovative designs at times, but apparently the craftsmanship just isn't there. I have no direct experience with either of them, and based on all I read here at TB, I never will ... :rollno:

Man that sucks...all your hopes for a great axe were smoldered, but you did right to talk, as your words will prevent some from giving this guy money, power to you.

edit- I was actually given dP as an option for my 9 string back in the day, but they always seemed suspicious and roughly crafted :hmm:
