my EBMM stingray begins its diet today

this is looking like a fantastic project! ....hey if i were to give you a stingray neck to get finished like yours, how much would you charge?

well, i made the alternate HH pickguard, but i've been going back and forth about routing this new body for an additional neck pickup. if EB still made/offered white pickup covers without the pole piece holes, i'd probably do it (since it would look alot cleaner, but to me, the bass just looks too busy with the two giant pickups and 16 exposed magnet poles. i realize that i could just route it and still use it with the single pickup guard, but being kind of a purist, i don't like having extra, unused routes in an instrument, and actually like its simplicity, so i think i'm going to leave it as a single pickup bass. plus, the middle pickup is a little bit in the way for my slap technique, and i really don't like having a 'hollow' under the guard in the middle of the body.

i figure that i can still get more sounds out of it by running a 3 way rotary switch that would switch between running the stock dual coil (or the Duncan SMB-4A) pickup this way:

position 1: parallel (stock)
position 2: split (the coil closest to the neck)
position 3: series

the controls would be volume, 3-way sw., midrange, and stacked treble/bass controls. i haven't had a chance to compare the seymour duncan to the stock pickup yet, but i have heard nothing but good things about them.

A little late to the party as usual but I'm here to chime in about the Duncan SMB-4A pickup.
I have one on my Clement custom and its terrific! When I solo it, its as close as you can get to a "true" MM sound without have an actual MM. Its not completely dead-on because I believe mine is slightly closer to the bridge than an actual MM, plus its running through a Bart pre and not the MM proprietary one.
IMHO, the different pickup position gives it a touch more highs and slightly less lows, but in a band setting I doubt you could really tell.
I just wish I had thought of the coil-splitting options you're going to have.
Any thoughts about sticking to the 4 position rotary? Keep the 3 options you already have and add in the ability to split off the bridge coil as well.

BEAUTIFUL work BTW! I wish you lived about 3000 miles closer so I could drop in and visit the shop!

good to hear that the Duncan is on par with the MM pickup. i would expect that from SD.

i could put in the 4 way, but i have no real desire for a single coil any closer to the bridge in a ray. IMO, they're pretty burpy as they are, but i suppose that i could try it.

to clean/prep it and shoot it with nitro, i normally charge about $200.00 on a maple and $175 for a rosewood.
