my EBMM stingray begins its diet today

Hey John, one of my HH PUs came to me dodge, one of the coils in the neck PU didn't work after a while. The effect of this with the switching is that I was able to get a single coil sound from the bridge PU on one setting and I actually really dug it! Sounded really cool and funky and organic. However it did have a massive buzz. MM does rely on the humbucking technique to get rid of buzz, and if you plan to use a single coil setting it may make sense to do the whole foil set-up similar to what one might do to a jazz bass. Looking even better after the gloss!

well i think that you are. IMO 8.9-9lbs is a reasonable (and comfortable weight for any solid body bass, but especially for a stingray.

yeah. i was thinking about that. in the series and parallel modes, i'm sure it'll be silent, but the single coil mode would be destined to hum. i'll probably just paint the cavites in this one to be on the safe side. thanks for the info.

well, I guess I'm the luckiest guy around here...

my stingray 4H is sub 8lbs, 3.8 kg to be exact, it light as a feather... I bought it used in mint condition for a half price of new ones,...

and on top of it...
it has natural color....hehe,

altough i would prefer it to be black, but i sold my black 5 kg stingray long time ago...

I sell it because it's too heavy for me...

whaddya know....

3.8 kilos equates to 8.37 lbs (or 8lbs 6oz) , not sub 8lbs. not under 8, so it's a little under 8 1/2, but you still are lucky since that's very light for a ray.

the swamp ash plank that i made mine out of is almost as light as swamp ash gets at 1.69lb/bd ft, so unless one had a super lightweight neck to go with a superlight body, i can hardly imagine one getting in at under 8lbs.

ups..my bad....I tought kg to lbs.. is as simple a 1 kg=2lbs..

btw... great work there... are you a pro luthier?...

i got the last of the gloss top coats on it today. the finish (2 coats of sealer and 8 coats of lacquer) ended up adding 3.5 ounces to its weight, so the body, with finish weighs 3 lbs 7.5 ounces now. it may lose a tiny bit of weight when it cures and then gets wet sanded & buffed, but i'm completely happy with having an under 3 1/2 pound stingray body w/finish. i mean, it's a whopping 2lbs 1.4oz lighter than the original one. ;)

Outstanding work, are you for hire? :D

I consider myself to be the luckiest Ray player - got an 8.6lb '09 4H 2EQ with a strings-thru bridge!; on top of that it's got an ebony board w/black compensated nut - all from the factory. Most importantly, it plays & sounds amazing!

But I also own a 10.5lb Classic that swallows all basses...
