My Essential Basses

Is there a thread about your upright? Your fully carved Korean got me curious.

My upright is a 2007 Carlo Giordano SB300J 3/4

Just curious....did you learn upright first and then move to electric? Maybe a thread for another day, but I've never played upright and I'm curious about how you made the transition.

For me, adjusting to a short-scale fretboard is challenging enough....going to upright seems like a bridge too far.

I started with piano lessons as a kid,
then guitar lessons as a teenager,
then electric bass,
and finally upright.

I never took lessons for upright, but I found the transition to be natural.
There are differences in technique and wrist angle.
I generally find the upright to be more comfortable/ergonomic;
except when it comes to carrying gear across town.

I stick pretty much with my Hammersmith PJ4 these days since I got it in March, although in my new instrumental band I'm experimenting with some of my older basses just to see how they work. But we're not playing out yet, just writing and rehearsing, and I think by the time we start playing out, I'll probably end up using just the Hammersmith in that band, too, although our guitarist wants me to use my 5-string for some songs just because switching up looks cool. Too bad I hate switching up and playing 5's.
Is this primarily a weight thing, or are you getting more in terms of tone or comfort that you don't get out of your other basses?

I do like the J profile of the neck, too. But I honestly can't say that I don't like the sound I get out of my two Fender Precisions, one of which is a highly modded PJ. All three of them sound equally great to me. So I'd say it's primarily low weight and thinner neck profile that makes me like the Hammersmith more. That and it being black/black/maple :D

I sold my Talman TMB100 yesterday. I have sold two basses in about two weeks. The Talman is nice, but I just did not need it. I can really see me only with my DJ5, my Forum Fives, and my U-Bass. My SX Fretless is technically my daughter's bass.

For me, it would be my No. 1 Aerodyne and my Bongo 5 HS. They cover so many tones and fit in almost every situation with some string changes. I'd love to have an active P/J with a flatter radius and a 1.625" fretboard, and probably a Stingray H, but those two do everything I need.

This one does it all for me. I could see owning something else, and probably will pick up a good used 4 string Passive Jazz like a JO or DJ. But I went thru a lot of basses from Boutique to Fender and I have found the tone and package that works for me in a Sadowsky MV5. I've played lots of basses but once I settled on the MV5 nothing else has ever given me that sell everything because I have to have one GAS

I only have 2 (downsized from 3, sold my custom PJ) - Fender Highway One P '09 with EMG GZR and Music Man S.U.B. Two of my favorite tones (good ol' passive P and a 2 band Ray) and I can pretty much do all I need with them, which are currently 2 bands I'm in - P with flats for the more vintage based rock and Led Zeppelin, and MM SUB for RHCP tribute, but I play anything from rock, funk, jazz, whatever with those 2 basses and I'm happy.

That's a great combo!
