My Essential Basses

image.jpeg
My fleet. I played a gig last night with the Ricky, that's my go to. But lately I've been digging the P. I feel pretty well rounded with these guys.

Multiple basses are nice, but knowing which ones are your bread and butter is special.
Dr. Cheese, you are in wonderful place in your life

Thank you. My biggest regret is that I waited so late in life to commit fully to lessons. I really don't if I never made a major mark in the world playing, I just regret not being the best I could be most of my life.

That said, I try like heck not to cry over spilt milk ;)

I'm feeling like I've got "my 3"- an MIM P with LaBellas that sounds way better than it should and is a dream to play, A Carvin LB70 with DR Pure Blues that is also a great player with an amazing range, and my latest addition, an SR5 HH that I'm still making friends with, but the tone(s) is monster. I've actually also got an Ibby SR605 that is pretty sweet, but now that I have the Stingray I'm selling that one.

I'm starting to think I just love basses in general because every time I see a Talman I want to take it home- thank God I haven't come across one in a color I like! How do you like yours Dr. Cheese? How's it compare with the rest of your line-up?

I stick pretty much with my Hammersmith PJ4 these days since I got it in March, although in my new instrumental band I'm experimenting with some of my older basses just to see how they work. But we're not playing out yet, just writing and rehearsing, and I think by the time we start playing out, I'll probably end up using just the Hammersmith in that band, too, although our guitarist wants me to use my 5-string for some songs just because switching up looks cool. Too bad I hate switching up and playing 5's.

I wish I could narrow it down like that...I need all kinds of stuff on any given weeks
-5 string with flats (I prefer this bass)
-5 string with rounds - the flats don't cut it on those "Guns N Roses tone" songs
-fretless - currently own a 4 but would prefer a 5
-active bass - 4 string w rounds - for "modern" sounding stuff and esp if its that modern 16th notes with a pick stuff (5th string would get in the way)
-upright stuff - would love a Kala U Bass but I do too much arco playing
-a short scale too!

I like to use one bass per gig so I take the most appropriate one and compromise on some material if needed for convenience sake

Got a few things in my closet--some are mementos of past times for me--but there are two Sadowskys I play, all the time: a Metro Will Lee 5 with singles for gigs, and an NYC WL5 with soaps for practicing at home.

Yeah, it's a good feeling to settle in, after some experimentation, on just a couple instruments that really _work_ for you.
