+100. We're the same age, same scenario. Back in the 80s, I was more likely to catch Sasquatch or Nessie in a music store than an actual Rick bass.
Fast forward to last September, I was 46 y.o., found a deal on a used Rick 4003 (2010) for a solid price on CL and figured f*ck it, now or never. The neck never survived humidity changes, seasonal changes, etc. Could slide a copy of War and Peace under the strings at the 12th fret.
Loved the sound. Weight didn't bother me. I may circle back if i hit the lottery.
