My f'ing kid

You're new here. I don't know the actual makeup - we have everything from big time pros to complete beginners on here but I think the majority are weekend warrior types. Family guys (and gals) with spouses and kids and jobs, etc. You can talk all the smack you want about Fender or Gibson or KISS or Jaco but when say something like you did about kids (even jokingly) you're not gonna get a lot of love. Well, dead baby jokes go over pretty well - we do have a sense of humor.

No harm, no foul. Welcome aboard.

I adopted this kid in her teen years and honestly don't have the time to waste listing all the great and wonderful things I've done to enrich her life and opportunities she's been given just to defend my self to any one, on line or otherwise.

She's a brat at times. Strike that. A shaging brat at times.

But you don't know me. You just want to bust my chops like so many others to make your self fell superior, high and mighty, better than thou or what have you. so no harm, no foul

TalkBass has its share of judgmental a-holes with no sense of humor, don't sweat it.

Now, maybe what we need here is a good dead baby joke thread...

But then she'll never hear me when I finally master it.

Are you new to bass? New to being a musician? New to Talk Bass? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions please heed the following advise.

Never and I mean never let anybody hear a work in progress. Only break it out when you feel you have it down enough to show it. :) (unsolicited advise from an old hack player) :D

PS: Welcome to Talk Bass, enjoy the journey.

That's all I have to say about that.

Not MY kid, but my little brother (13) constantly bashes on my playing. Especially if he walks in while I'm learning something. He'll typically say "That sounds terrible" even if I know I'm doing it right. I'm no Wooten but whenever I try slapping, it sounds decent, but then he really starts to bag on my playing, just because he thinks it sounds bad. It gets old after a while, and it's hard to keep up motivation when all you/I hear is negative comments.

But I'm improving despite it, and so can you. Buy headphones, practice in your room with the door closed and unamped, etc. happy playing and good luck on the journey. :)

Ask him for ideas to help you improve your playing. Either he won't contribute any because he doesn't want to or doesn't have any, or he'll give you some ideas that might help you.

Family's family. She's busting your balls because she can. All in good fun. Of course, maybe she was laughing not because you missed notes but you had the funky-face when playing. That face all musicians make when they're deep into the music.

If anything, at least you'll remember to make sure to hit those notes... in a negative-reinforcement way. The good thing is she recognizes the song.

That wasn't it at all...I have no other motivations as you allude to other than I expressed my opinion on it. This ain't no new age parenting crap or holier than thou driving it. Ask yourself the real reason why my posting that one sentence got your panties in such a twist. I wasn't calling to task your parenting prowess or anything. And for the record, I have more than one child, sure they can be a challenge at times, sometimes daily...I just don't go public forum with it. Good on ya for adopting a child. But hey, as you say no harm no foul. But if you don't like differing opinion, stay off the boards and go master your song.

Edit: Oh, and Welcome to TalkBass!

Keep practicing and show em what persistance & dedication is all about.
My kid brother quit piano lessons after one year. I asked why?
He said I learned all that I could from that teacher.
Yah, he was lazy & could not play a simple scale.

Look at it this way. Your kid's snide comments are good practice for when you play a gig where there is always some drunk who knows everything about nothing and will proceed to instruct you on the finer points of musicianship. Gotta love the afluence of incahol. LOL It's going to happen sooner or later so get used to it. If possible, can you practice in a separate room, close the door and use a practice amp with head phones. You can hook up the computer or MP3 payer to the amp as well. No one can hear you and you can't hear comments from the peanut gallery.:):bassist:

Well I've tried playing before, always ended up not getting to far because I always have some one around me when I play. So I pulled the family together and told them that I'm going to pick the bass back up and thats going to be my time and my thing. And most who have families will understand that every one has their thing. Wife does volunteering, kids do karate and softball, I'm doing the bass. I can't quit because its hard or because of snickering, what example would I be setting then?

In our family, good-natured ribbing is perfectly acceptable; malicious teasing is not. Only you know which category her snickering falls into. If it's the former, laugh along; you probably *did* sound funny. :)

If it's the latter, I would probably wait until my blood had cooled, and then pick a moment when I felt my kid was receptive to a conversation like this:

"Hey kiddo, remember earlier today when you made fun of my playing? Well, I know you were joking, but it made me wonder if I've ever done the same thing to you without realizing it. I would never want to criticize something that was important to you, especially if you were giving it your best effort. And now that I know how it feels, I'm going to try and be more supportive of you and your goals from now on. And in return, maybe you can take it easy on me the next time you hear me butchering my bass?"

Yes, it's a little sleight of hand, but by couching the conversation in terms of "I'm guilty of the same thing" it minimizes the likelihood that she will get defensive. ;)
