Hi Bassmaniacs,

My wife and I gone to have a baby. This is my last chance to spend free money on my bass gear. I wish to get my MIJ 1989 Jazz updated. I already update tuners and bridge. My favorite luthier make the neck of this bass the best neck for me.

Now PUPS and Preamp....To many options need help...

J-Retro or Sansamp bass DI
DiMarzio J-model, Fralin or Novak

I'M looking for a vintage sound but with a + on the bottom end.

Keep your stock pickups.

Buy an Audere preamp. It perfectly describes "I'M looking for a vintage sound but with a + on the bottom end."

It's a no brainer, easy to install, perfect fit into a Jazz. 150 bucks US.

Do a search on here, it gets rave reviews. To replace your current setup it as simple as clipping a few wires and the Audere has screw posts and a crimp for the ground wire, no soldering required.

I have the Dimarzio Ultra J's in my Squier Jazz bass and I absolutely love them. Very smooth sounding with the neck pickup up, but it'll growl with the bridge pickup up.

Yes, I thought Audere immediately when you descibed the tone you want. I have one in my 62' ri. PUPS, I reccommend the Nordstrands for vintage tone.

1 Audere on the way... will see later for the pups but from what i read, DiMarzio model-J (DP123) seem's to be for me. More bottom and a bit more nasty than original pups without hurting the ''vintage'' sound too bad.

j-retro is the best JAZZ bass pre...now for pickups...big singles sound relly big with big earthquaking low-end but it´s dark sunding...aero(my favorites) are awesome to me are perfect (my personal taste) very agressive growly great low-end...fralins traditional great sounding...nordstrans single coils very nice modern sounding pickups...now you want to sound more traditional or a little bit modern-traditional?

I would consider custom pickups. Stan Hinesly of HAS-sound will make you a set to your spec. for around the same price as any of the above suggestions

Totally agree with the Audere recommendation. After that I would say that pickup relacement would not make a substantial difference. The Japanese PUs are good quality as is the rest of the bass.

I think the Villex have the basic vintage vibe...but what makes it sound a little different from a Fralin for example is that bottom. I have these in 1 bass and its totally has a bit of girth (somewhat active sounding but not totally) wiht the a throaty upper mid.

The Delano might be a good choice as well...(My next bass will have either the Delano or Nordy's) however I'm making it for totally of a 'cutty' vintage vibe.

However based on your description Villex (I'm not sure why folks don't use them as much).

Wow since I last posted I have gone through a few Js and the Nordstrand/Audere is by far my favorite combo for a Jazz.
