My HORRIBLE Alleva-Coppolo experience...

Hang in there Addison!
You did the right thing.

My question for you is:

If Jimmy offered to accept the bass back as a return, could you give him the opportunity to build you (in a timely manner) an equivalent replacement bass, for the same price, that met your original expectations? Would you be willing to do that or do you just want the refund?
My hope is that there could be a win-win outcome for both AC and the OP.

I don't see how your question is relevent to the discussion. If Jimmy wants to work out a deal where he builds the OP a new bass, that is between the two of them. I don't think the OP needs to answer your questions about what he would be/not be willing to do. He should be offered a full refund, and if any conversation is to continue between AC and him it should occur after the refund.

Also I don't see why you would be concerned for a good outcome for AC. AC already got a great outcome, selling a crap bass for 5k.

In the boutique instrument business, customer service really is king. Over the years I've only owned a couple of basses that would be considered boutique instruments. But when I had a very minor issue with one regarding volume knobs? I was able to get the head of that company on the phone for a surprisingly long phone call and a very quick resolution.

In this instance where the issues with the instrument appear to be far more serious than was originally conveyed to the OP? A phone call might speed the way to resolution. But given the serious nature of the defects. I absolutely understand the OP's desire to conduct communication via email for the sake of documentation. But the head of a boutique instrument shop should pay just as much attention to email communication as they do to phone calls.

When you hear a story like this about a boutique instrument builder, it definitely gives you pause. Especially since internet rumblings about a business can spread like wildfire. When Reddit picked up gripes about this one business in Arizona from Yelp, it went viral and was all over the internet. And that particular incident should be a lesson to many a small business owner to deal with every customer service issue in a serious fashion.

Chris,

I just want to say "thanks" for your post. I have been curious about Jimmy's basses, and I do make an occasional boutique bass purchase. Like you, I'd be deeply disappointed and thoroughly frustrated by this experience. Your post will keep me and at least a few others from making a similar mistake.

Best wishes for a good outcome!
Greg

The distortions appear here AFTER the OP made his statement. I have NO issue with anything the OP stated, and find he did so fairly and I have respect for his request for calm. What I DO have a problem with is a response (such as your's) that's extracted a potion of a clearly written statement in an attempt to give new meaning to it.

Your post was confusing, it sounded like you were claiming the distortion started with the OP, to be fair.

...

The angry mob is normal sideband crap that should be ignored... because it only clouds the issue. And yes, some companies have put out products with issues but this case is bothersome IMO because there are so many issues that it frankly boggles the mind that someone would ship not considering the repercussions.

...

But what is going to motivate the builder to do the right thing?

A polite mob?

Why wasn't a polite customer enough? This one man showed patience with an arrogant builder. He provided video evidence. He stayed polite and got...nowhere. He got rude emails with condescending tone.

The anger displayed here is what is making any difference if this thread is making a difference.

The "he is aware of the situation" makes me laugh. The "situation" now is this PR disaster, not that he tried to rip off an honest customer. Who tried to get an honest refund. Using honest technique and polite manners.

O.P. should be given an immediate refund. No questions asked.

And no TB post to get it done.

I have yet to see any bass that I would pay more than $2000 for, and this includes the USA Spectors that I adore ever so much.

Agree. Like I said besides that bass I'm sure Jimmy makes a good product but 5k for a Fender clone?

I know its better made than a Fender but how much better for that much money.

If I'm spending 5 grand the bass better be fancy with crazy wood, inlays etc and come to me dead on perfect.

I hope the OP gets his money back or the bass repaired right. I don't understand why the owner would want to hurt his buisness rep over one bad deal and 5k?

That's actually not the angry mob behavior. The PR nightmare is that now people are saying "I don't want to even try an Alleva-Coppolo after this mess", but the angry mob stuff is "we'll shove the *** up your ***" sort of emails that Jimmy is claiming to receive. The PR nightmare should be enough.

I guess if you've got it you can spend it on what you like but I would have a hard time rationalizing 5K for any bass, I simply dont see the value there, I wouldnt mind owning a nice pre CBS jazz either but not at todays prices.

i just talked at length to Jimmy. he read me some of the many emails he got tonight.

"you're a total POS" was used a lot-
but the longshot fave for psychosexual transference hysteria so far has been:

"...and if it was me, i would've come to your shop and watched the LOOK on your face as i ****** the neck of the bass up your ***"...

as far as the bass in question-
is there a problem? sure.
can it be remedied? most likely.

has the remedy timeframe been satisfactory to all immediately involved
(that is, the OP and jimmy)? apparently not.

again, can it be remedied? most likely.

meanwhile, the lip-smacking
"we're at 40,000 VIEWS and COUNTING!!!!"
and
"THIS wil be at the TOP of AC's, like, GOOGLE SEARCH, mannnnnn..."
and
"his career is, like, OVER and his reputation is TORCHED!!"

by many posters who have never seen an AC bass in person, much less played one,
is more a symptom than an expression of concern.

the sun will rise in the morning, guys. we'll get through this.
and, hopefully, with some class and rationality.

and to that end, it also might be best to hear jimmy's side, before any more such Deliverance threats are spewed out there in the dark.

So he has time to play victim to you but not come here and attempt to explain or make things right?

This thread is not going to get locked unless the OP requests it or the issue becomes resolved. We have no more reason to lock bad customer service threads than we do good customer service threads, and bad customer service deserves just as much attention as good customer service does (and those threads take up 90% of the Basses forum). If the thread is not to your liking, move on to a different one.

+1

Question to the OP. I am a very conservative person who never buys anything of any value without seeing it. I also have no idea what it would be like to be able to afford things like this so I hope this question doesn't come off too uptight.

So you decide you're going to make a major financial purchase like this and high quality photos are unable or not offered to be shared from the Builder. And he was also clear the bass was sold in as is condition. Why not just spend the other $700 for a new one or make a weekend out of it just travel to New York City to see it I mean what's plane tickets when you're spending $5,000 on a bass?

Like I said I couldn't fathom spending that kind of money on a base the most I ever spent was 1800 on my upright and there was a lot of basses that I overlooked simply because I couldn't see them. I just don't understand when you have those kind of resources available to yourself how you don't take advantage of them.

I mean no disrespect to my question I simply just don't understand and wish to see it from your point of view I wish you the best of luck!

Just to point out - he has a photo on his FB page showing 8 basses ready to ship as "this week's batch".

If that batch is worth 35K or more at approximately 4K or more per bass, I don't understand why he wouldn't want to make it right. It's nothing to him really, except bad press.

...When did this thread digress into 'the high price of basses rant"? How is this helping the OP's situation?
