My HORRIBLE Alleva-Coppolo experience...

As much as I would love to enjoy the support that is coming from pretty much everyone (at the very least, the collective opinion seems to help support the idea that I'm not completely insane) please understand that I honestly don't enjoy this... I am literally SICKENED by the fact that I felt like I had to resort to this and would have been a lot happier had Jimmy simply told me he'd give me a refund.

And I know that I don't know most of you, but please trust that I tried to remain as cool as humanly possible up until the bitter end.

Along with my deepest sympathy, you have my deepest respect for not letting your emotions cloud your responses. You're not enraged, you're not even righteously indignant, you have remained extraordinarily cool. It takes courage to bring this public, but it's the right thing to do, and I thank you for it.

I could easily have made the same mistake. Same as you, I never would have expected something like that (I'm trying to use the same restraint as you) from A-C... I would have taken the builder at his word. I hope you get your well-deserved refund soon.

I hope everything turns out OK in the end, friend.

Everybody has their ups and lows, I'm sure AC hopefully will learn and evolve from this "spalted" situation.

And I sure hope he builds you a damn fine NEW bass for 5k.

I could buy two Sandbergs with that Money and still go on a holiday.

I have a 100$ Marlin P bass clone that has better fretwork. And it's supposed to be a BAD clone.

Why not just spend the other $700 for a new one or make a weekend out of it just travel to New York City to see it I mean what's plane tickets when you're spending $5,000 on a bass?

A new one would be quite a wait...not sure if it's the same, but when I inquired last year the wait time was over a year.

I don't think the OP is rich...he sold 2 basses to buy the AC.

This thread is not going to get locked unless the OP requests it or the issue becomes resolved. We have no more reason to lock bad customer service threads than we do good customer service threads, and bad customer service deserves just as much attention as good customer service does (and those threads take up 90% of the Basses forum). If the thread is not to your liking, move on to a different one.

Major +1 ;)

He dug his own grave on that. Perhaps if he had visited this earlier he wouldn't have to worry about that

If the OP's post gets JC to take action, great. However, JC does not owe the TB community an appearance. The issue needs to be resolved between JC and the OP, no one more.

Don't get me wrong, I'd like him to make an appearance here, but I understand his point of view. He is going to get absolutely mobbed by people here.

If I was him, I'd resolve the matter quickly, and maybe then post after all has been settled.

Question to the OP. I am a very conservative person who never buys anything of any value without seeing it. I also have no idea what it would be like to be able to afford things like this so I hope this question doesn't come off too uptight.

So you decide you're going to make a major financial purchase like this and high quality photos are unable or not offered to be shared from the Builder. And he was also clear the bass was sold in as is condition. Why not just spend the other $700 for a new one or make a weekend out of it just travel to New York City to see it I mean what's plane tickets when you're spending $5,000 on a bass?

Like I said I couldn't fathom spending that kind of money on a base the most I ever spent was 1800 on my upright and there was a lot of basses that I overlooked simply because I couldn't see them. I just don't understand when you have those kind of resources available to yourself how you don't take advantage of them.

I mean no disrespect to my question I simply just don't understand and wish to see it from your point of view I wish you the best of luck!

Many people don't have the time or money to travel to different shops to test drive basses. Fly to 3 different cities for missions like this and you'll end up spending almost as much as you would on a new AC bass. So you go on a builder's reputation. Do some homework, talk to the builder, and if you're left with a good impression, buying sight unseen is totally par for the course.

I know several people who've spent big dollars on high end instruments without ever having played one before. Hell, i've done it myself. None, including me, have ever had an experience like the OP's.

That's actually not the angry mob behavior. The PR nightmare is that now people are saying "I don't want to even try an Alleva-Coppolo after this mess", but the angry mob stuff is "we'll shove the *** up your ***" sort of emails that Jimmy is claiming to receive. The PR nightmare should be enough.

No!

This man with his email should have been enough.

Then the OP even shot a demo of the setup issues - and yes, I saw his face too. But what really hit home for me was his voice. That is the voice of a man under serious stress.

And the luthier didn't get it?

He needs a PR nightmare to wake up?

And that seems to be okay with some of you.

I don't care if Jimmy is capable of building the most amazing ""Fender-inspired" instruments on the planet. The fact that this particular example left his shop and the total absence of customer service following the transaction is inexcusable. When buying an A-C, do you plunk down your $5K and hope you get a "good one?"

Best of luck, OP, and thank you for posting.

Now hang on a cotton-picking moment - don't accuse me of stuff I'm not saying! I'm very sympathetic toward the OP, and I agree with you 100% that had the builder settled this with him prior to this, none of this would be necessary. However, at what point are we going from good supportive community to idiotic mob? The point where TB members start saying threats toward someone they don't know about something that has nothing to do with them!

What I'm saying is this thread should have been enough for everyone else involved to make a stance. Making threats is 100% not necessary. And yes, the OP should have been 100% refunded from the moment he received it and was understandably upset. That bass is $5K trash.

What a nightmare. That's pretty shocking, and it sounds clear that the builder isn't taking responsibility for clearly sub par work. Buying a used bass, it's not uncommon to have something botched aftermarket, but to get it like this FROM THE SHOP is seriously tragic. Were the AC's I played at namm absolutely flawless? Yes. Would I order or buy an ac without playing it first.... Not now

I have no dog in this fight. I just have a couple questions for the OP really.

IF you do resort to legal. Have you researched your options? The main reason I ask is at over $5,000 at least in Illinois, thats above the small claims limit. And What state will you file or do you HAVE to file in your home state, and HOPE he or a representative shows up?

I only mention because I went thru small claims , but this was for a used car from a dealership. The car did have a All Sales Final..but we won. Why? Long story short...The trans fluid was fresh...checked on site...a week or so later..trans dies...Its under the 11 day lemon law in Illinois. So we sued on Fraud...Because we could not make an accurate assumption of the transmissions state at the dealer. So warning to anybody buying a used car, even from a reputable dealer..if the trans fluid looks brand spanking new and still smells sweet....

So, you may have a chance at fraud, if you go this route of bringing in the courts, because you honestly feel that you were not sold goods that were accurately described to you.

One thing, never, NEVER send anything nasty to him. And as you have done, separate yourself from the hate mail and under the bus throwing, because if you DO go to court..this is possibly admissible in his defense. Nothing you don't already know.

Best of luck and hope everything ends quickly for you.

I think "we" should allow a bit of time, for "Jimmy" to reply.

Did you read post #290?

Jimmy is obviously in no rush to come in here and defend himself!....ideally what would he have to say?

If he says, sorry for that i shouldnt have let that leave my shop and i have sent your full refund? If this would be the case he looks like a real *** for trying to pull a fast one.

Or he can chime in and say..."oh i didnt know the bass was in that condition, and i wasnt anywhere near the shop when that bass went out"...but it would be obvious BS because he was the one that said "It shows some player wear"...umm yea right

Bad business practice any way you want to slice it. Dont expect Jimmy to chime in here on this matter any time soon.

I'm not sure why you assume I'm wealthy just because I bought a $5K bass.

But... since you're asking... that bass was about 3 months salary for me. I'm a graphic designer at a small private company, not a plastic surgeon.

Things are kind of hazy, but I bought my first bass with my own money on a credit card that had like 30% interest. It was a Stingray for like $1000.

My very first "boutique" bass was a Warwick Thumb bass, which was sold to me at distributor cost through a second tier artist endorsement deal, because the band I was in at the time was "about to break."

I was flat broke and I actually got the money to buy it from a private investor in the band (he was also convinced we would "make it")... I eventually bought it back from him after the band broke up at a depreciated cost and eventually sold it for a nominal profit.

I used that money and the money from the sale of a Stingray and bought a USA Lakland at dealer cost because I was working in a music store at the time. When I moved to where I live now from Chicago, I cashed out my 401K and bought my wife an engagements ring... used the rest of the money to buy a second Lakland.

I traded one Lakland straight across for the Mike Lull M5V that I sold to help finance the A-C... and I sold the other Lakland, an old P-Bass I had aquired through other trades, and a bunch of other stuff to buy the Zon 519 I sold to help fund some of the other half of the A-C.

The remaining balance was put on a credit card.

So... credit cards, being in a popular band a long time ago that had a "hookup", and cashing out my old 401K helped me get on the boutique bass track... it all went downhill from there.

I have never spent this kind of money on anything in my life... I was going purely on my dialogue with Jimmy and what seemed to be a fairly solid reputation online and through people I trust.

If I was a plastic surgeon or a lottery winner and I had been hemorrhaging money from my eyeballs, a quick plane trip on my private jet to LA to check out the bass wouldn't be that out of the question, to be honest.

I wish I could have been in that position.

However, at what point are we going from good supportive community to idiotic mob? The point where TB members start saying threats toward someone they don't know about something that has nothing to do with them!

That's very unfortunate, absolutely. NO ONE should be contacting AC over this besides the OP - that someone not personally involved would take it upon themselves to contact AC is completely inappropriate. Discuss the situation here, that's what forums are for. But threats from the gallery are completely uncalled for.
