My HORRIBLE Alleva-Coppolo experience...

True, the majority (by sheer numbers) of bass guitar-ists are NOT on TalkBass, they're the thousands of Schecter/Dean/Squier-buyers who have never even HEARD of Alleva-Coppolo basses.

However, this is where that "sheer numbers" argument falls flat.

The percentage of bassists on TalkBass who HAVE heard of Alleva-Coppolo instruments is relatively high, and there are numerous members here who are among the "OPINION LEADERS" in the field.... you know who these name-brand guys are, and you've seen them post here.

Even if 90% of the bass-world has never heard of AC, I'd bet 90% of the TB community HAS. And many of us are (or were) the potential buyers.... not the numbers of the Squier crowd, but an outsized percentage of the market for a $5K bass are on TalkBass.... or influenced by those on TalkBass...and have seen this thread.

Exactly right. As someone who has and likely will again throw down a few thousand dollars for a single instrument, I can tell you that I found this thread and Jimmy's approach to customer service(as well as instrument making and business practices in general) to sway me from ever considering an AC as a custom order.

Wow.. what an incredibly sad tale. I hope Jimmy moves mountains to put this right.

Jauqo - I disagree. A brand like AC relies on public perception. Without it, he wouldn't be able to charge so much. This thread has put a huge dent in that perception.

Letting that bass out into the wild is bad enough, but resolvable. The way in which Jimmy handles it is what's important, and so far he's blown it.

Yes, the damage is only among TB members, but news travels fast.

Jimmy's good reputation in the end will absorb this particular incident.

I certainly hope so. :bassist:

I ALSO hope the OP's problem gets sorted VERY quickly & in the expected manner. As I think it will & should.

I am one very appreciative A-C owner- a FANTASTIC bass. Jim certainly is a gifted craftsman & I'm sure things will be fine for him. I just hope this gets sorted respectfully, quickly. :)

Not trying to throw anyone under a bus. He's doing it himself. Any flames being thrown here are warranted, and it doesn't have to become a debate. Will his brand survive, even if he choses to not remedy this particular situation, yes. Will his reputation, as a result of this situation, be tarnished at least within this fraction of his target market, yes.

Guys can jump on the throw the AC brand under the bus all day but how many of them were really going to spend 5K on an AC or any brand J bass?

Seriously.

Honestly, I'd never heard of him until I joined TB about 3 years ago...and yeah he gets a lot of love here...

But speaking as ONE individual that has recently purchased @ 15k worth of equipment in the past few years INCLUDING 3 boutique instruments, I can say that he WILL NEVER get a penny of mine because of this incident

i just talked at length to Jimmy. he read me some of the many emails he got tonight.

"you're a total POS" was used a lot-
but the longshot fave for psychosexual transference hysteria so far has been:

"...and if it was me, i would've come to your shop and watched the LOOK on your face as i ****** the neck of the bass up your ***"...

as far as the bass in question-
is there a problem? sure.
can it be remedied? most likely.

has the remedy timeframe been satisfactory to all immediately involved
(that is, the OP and jimmy)? apparently not.

again, can it be remedied? most likely.

meanwhile, the lip-smacking
"we're at 40,000 VIEWS and COUNTING!!!!"
and
"THIS wil be at the TOP of AC's, like, GOOGLE SEARCH, mannnnnn..."
and
"his career is, like, OVER and his reputation is TORCHED!!"

by many posters who have never seen an AC bass in person, much less played one,
is more a symptom than an expression of concern.

the sun will rise in the morning, guys. we'll get through this.
and, hopefully, with some class and rationality.

and to that end, it also might be best to hear jimmy's side, before any more such Deliverance threats are spewed out there in the dark.

To joe vegas-
You're right, I would love to hear Jimmy's side. Also, when making a point, as you are trying to, it's probably best to not put quotes around things you are paraphrasing or trying to dumb down. Regarding the subtopic of potential harm to a respected and successful luthier's reputation, as a result of this incident, those topics you're throwing quotes around are perfectly valid...sort of like, the reality of like, the internet- man.

Absolutely. But I can't help thinking he should have popped his head above the parapet before now, if only to say 'I'm on it, and I'll give my side soon'.

I'm more apt to believe the "nobody" OP than I am to believe the word of a guy who has obviously treated his first time buyer poorly and refused, thus far, to make any kind of statement...he's busy choosing words to put out fires...

Bottom line...OP deserves a refund and that bass NEVER should've left that shop in that condition...to offer to "take it back if I find a dealer willing to take it..." is UTTERLY REPREHENSIBLE!!!! And if he were a car dealer caught doing that he'd be in for some serious fines...

I don't give a s@$t what kind of reputation he has...

I don't think there's a single contributor to this thread who isn't absolutely interested in hearing Jimmy's side of the story.

The kind of crap you've mentioned which he has been sent is lamentable and inexcusable. However, his reputation as both a builder and a businessman has taken a battering here, quite unnecessarily. Clearly, there can be no justification for sending out an instrument in that condition, at any price, while claiming it's no more than a couple of gigs worth of dinks. Those pictures are shocking. Moreso than that, though, is how little interest he has in keeping his customer happy. You could argue that he had no interest in his customer by sending that instrument out in that state to start off with but, even so, the OP's grievances are legitimate, I don't think anyone could dispute that. Telling the guy to effectively suck it up is unforgivable. Thankfully, the OP is based in the US and there are plenty of legal avenues he can follow to get his money back. For anyone outside the US, though, who may have been thinking of buying this brand, they will surely think twice about buying an instrument from him without being able to inspect it first. Sure, his business will probably survive but his reputation has been tarnished and the OP has had to put up with a pile of crap quite unnecessarily. Some class and rationality would have been a good idea when he was dealing with the OP a few weeks back.

gkbass13-

the "POS" and "bass neck-shoving" quotes are verbatim, as Jimmy read them to me.

the quotations around generic crowd-post language
(crowd-posts described as similarly-shaped language used by a sizeable number of posters, referencing a common sentiment) are tenable. no single individual's words are being singled out, and since these are generic group-thinks, i've added my own "like" and "mannn..." variations by choice.

yes, this particular bass is an issue.
will it somehow kill jimmy's career as a luthier? no. hardly.
every single boutique builder in contemporary history, all the guys we know and respect, have had at least a few instruments with issues over their decades of building. they continue to refine and improve their work, and guys still line up to buy them.

additionally, quite a few posters here are being vocal about the idea of a $5K Bass being something they'd never go near, as much as they are about THIS actual bass and its problems. yes, it's a ton of money. i sure a s*** don't have it. but if i did, and if i wanted a great new bass from a reputable builder, i'd look at the guys who have been building for a long time, who have great reviews from guys that paid full price for their stuff (as opposed to an endorsee), who deliver quality great-sounding instruments.

this particular issue, about this particular OP, bass, and builder, has become hot-button for sure.
but in the long run, Jimmy's stuff is amazing, sounds fantastic, looks and feels world-class.

and yes, it's been an INEXCUSABLE 14 HOURS already!!! and our 24-7 instant-response tweet-informed psyches can't STAND this..... DELAY!!!!
but, let's hear from him before digging his hole outside the vegas city limits, ok?

Jimmy's good reputation in the end will absorb this particular incident.

I don't know about that, Juaqo. What I've learned in this threads is that the builder:

- is capable of beyond atrocious build quality
- will not meet customer satisfaction (even at the 5k a bass price point)
- will knowingly sell an unacceptable bass to a buyer
- will lie about the condition of a bass he's trying to sell to a buyer
- will suggest very morally questionable ways to resolve an issue with a buyer

I shouldn't have to but I could potentially forgive the first two big issues I have with this situation, but the last three are just wrong on so many levels. As a consumer, I could never buy something from someone who I know is willing to swindle a customer if he can.

To the OP, I really feel your pain. To have such a dream turn into a nightmare as got to have you in knots. I really hope this gets resolved.

I have learned, through my grey hair, that there is often another side of the story. But, I have also learned that such incidents can destroy a small business, needlessly. Fusionbassed really summed this up eloquently:

.....your reputation is only as good as your last instrument and how you treat people fairly.

I had a disastrous experience with Mercedes six years ago. Leased a new car that was in the garage 19 times in a two year period. The garage position was that all the computer glitches were rectified over time and that the were following their policy. When I made such written claims such as "your 24 hour road side assistance program is exemplary, but I shouldn't know this" along with, "my family, friends and co workers now all know of my experience with your product and service. They, like me, look forward to seeing how you will recover from this." In the end, they replaced the car with an upgraded version, with more options that the previous car. They bought me out of my lease at the highest price and threw in another $5,000 towards a newer car. I ended up with a higher spec model, for less money. And a superbly reliable car. I have gone out of my way to tell that story over and over again, because I owe it to them. They more than recovered and offered superior customer service, expected of such a high value brand.

In my view, regardless of Jimmy's side of the story, he has no option other than to do the following to protect his brand image:

1. Take back the bass and absorb shipping.
2. Either refund the complete amount or offer the OP a new bass of his choice with a week to try it out and return it if not satisfied.
3. Either destroy the bass, or fix it and donate it to a school.

AC basses, from what I have read here on TB, are high end basses. They should be if they are sold for $5,000. Because of this incident, the pictures, the video, I am left with doubts about the product integrity of AC basses. I, like many who have read this horrible story, will now have doubts about the quality of product and the customer service. This incident and recovery will be shared with all kinds of bass players. Jimmy's business could suffer because of this.

It's deeply regrettable for the OP. And it's deeply regrettable for Jimmy who has built up an envious reputation for very high quality instruments and has not responded appropriately, from what we have learned. He has to come to this thread and chime in. Sometimes, in life, you have to publicly eat crow to maintain respect. It's not pleasant. I've done it in front of 400 people and its not pleasant. But it's the right thing to do.

I feel so bad for the OP. I really hope this gets resolved properly for you.

This is the first thread I have subscribed to in roughly six years.
