My HORRIBLE Alleva-Coppolo experience...

That's shocking. There's not a production line anywhere in the world where that bass would pass QA, even on a Friday. It's unbelievable that it's supposed to be the work of a craftsman.

I can't believe anyone who trades on a reputation for excellence would let something like that leave the shop.

he's been pretty cool in the past though with having basses that are far from perfect out there with his name on them so this bass doesnt really surprise me. theres definitely basses out there that posters here have called perfect that ive seen first hand that have funky fretwork,blocks/binding. like mentioned earlier as well, there are tb'rs that have had similar dealings with him that dont wont post since theyll have to deal with svtb15 calling them a liar or exaggerating or inferring theyre just an amateur thats too busy staring at their basses.

:)

What I don't understand is why a builder like AC, who has a dealer network, would sell direct except to signed endorsers.

If a dealer was involved here, the bass likely would never have been handed over to the customer until it was sell-able, that's what a dealer network is for...to protect the buyer and the builder both.

I'd also bet that most of AC's dealers do not have an "All Sales Final" policy.

I agreed with everything you said up until you started defending Jimmy. Nobody's denying that he has skills as a builder. BUT, his people skills need work.

Also, MANY other high-end builders come on here and discuss their basses. Hell, Nino Valenti was on here earlier today to say thank you to everyone.

What defense? That is my experience with the man. Like I said verbatim in my post - "AT LEAST I HAVE PRIOR EXPERIENCE TO BASE IT ON!!!" Actually I've had the experience 7 times over. What experience have you had with the man?

Wow, this is like watching rubberneckers at a particularly traffic accident - lots of opinions, and the bystanders are judge, jury, and executioner. It's sad, it's unfortunate, people have been hurt, but really it's our job to stay out of the way and let the principals and proper authorities sort his out.

I do not condone the sale of a shabby instrument, and I think Addison should pursue a solution with Jimmy first, and go legal if necessary.

I think that anyone that sent an e-mail to Alleva Coppolo is way out of line, unless you have been designated as a mediator by the OP - which I'm sure is not the case.

To make sweeping statements about Jimmy's character and business practices when you have little or no information to go on is totally uncool.

There is no way in hell Jimmy Coppolo is going to come on here and make an explanation, and for two very good reasons. Building basses is a profession which likely takes up a good portion of his time and effort - he can ill afford the energy required to wade into the world of social media over this. So, what little time he does have should (and likely will) be devoted to dealing with this customer individually. Also, who the heck is going to come out on their front porch and try to deal with a jacked up mob with pitchforks?

I've bought 7 instruments from Jimmy, and played dozens more. Currently I own 3. They speak to me like no other instrument that I've owned, and I will not hesitate to buy another when the time comes. My experience with Jimmy is that he's a guy who cares passionately about his instruments, and the people he builds them for. My opinion only - but AT LEAST I HAVE PRIOR EXPERIENCE TO BASE IT ON!!! For those of you that have not had the same positive experience that I have, I am sorry because Alleva Coppolo basses are world class instruments, but sometimes need a little tweaking to get the most out of them.

I have no argument or disagreement with the OP - The disappointment of an anticipated "lifetime instrument" gone wrong is a horrible feeling. He has calmly and dispassionately stated his case, given others a credible opinion, and let's face it - if the bass is a P.O.S., at $5K that is not really acceptable. However, since the rest of us are not really in the know about the whole situation, I think it best if everyone puts away the pitchforks, and let the OP and AC figure it out. Like everyone else, I will be very interested in the outcome of this.

Amen brother! Good to see some reason thrown into the pot.

Sorry - it's just not possible to get an instrument right for any possible player. I'm not talking about construction issues here, just final adjustments. Every bass needs them.
Maybe true but anyone who dares calls themselves a Luthier should at least be able to sand a body and spray a finish. That instrument is an expensive boat anchor, the builder needs to take it back and make it right or destroy it. His description of the instrument as having slight cosmetic issues is criminaly deceptive.

Sorry, guys, but we can't have a discussion on the forum soliciting donations to the OP, for reasons unrelated to this thread. A now-banned member of TB who IMO took advantage of the generosity of others is to blame...so it's now a forumwide rule. I don't think it's listed officially, and I'm not doing any reminders as I assume people will see my comment here.

Again, I'm sorry.

Just getting caught up on this thread. I really feel horrible for the OP. I would imagine for quite a few of us, this would be a once in a life time purchase. To have it turn out like this ( so far) would be a dream turned nightmare. I hope it turns out well. AKA, another bass or a full refund.

+1

Besides, I don't think it's TB's place to make right of AC's wrongdoing in this situation. Still a nice gesture, though :)

PM sent your way. My apologies if I did anything bad in this thread.
