Friends, I have been playing music in Beijing for almost a year now, and I feel that I have finally arrived...behold, my first negative Invalid Link Removed (the rest of the crowd were too busy enjoying our music to notice how boring we were).

Maybe I should print it out and frame it?

Going out on a limb here, if only because the word, "Gypsy" was in there...any chance you know/play with Doug Martin?

Doug Martin...not sure. The name rings a bell somewhere but I'm not sure why or where from. Gypsy is there because the band in question is a gypsy jazz trio - myself and two acoustic guitarists playing Django-esque tunes and some more familiar standards as well.

Doug is an absolutely wonderful player and has totally embraced the gypsy jazz idiom. He moves between the U.S. west coast and China - mostly Shanghai, but also occasionally in Beijing - spending roughly half the year in each locale. If you happen to run into him, please say hello.

Yes, 'Enoteca' is the name of the wine bar that we play at - though some chinese wine does bear resemblance to the former...

I've been playing and living in Beijing for almost 12 years now, also an Australian. Drums and bass mainly. Do you play exclusively or are you doing something else as well?

Hi Li Youwei, I'm mostly playing, have done a little bit of english teaching and whatnot (haven't we all...). How about you? Who do you play with here?

I took two years off from Beijing and playing to do some more music study in Melbourne, been back in Beijing for a year, so not many gigs right now, but a lot of drum teaching at the Midi school etc.
Before that I played bass in Black Cat Bone, and drums in loads of rock bands including Sand and Skyscraper. Where else do you play?

Oh nice, I've heard lots of good things about Black Cat Bone! Haven't seen them live yet though. I'm considering studying in Melbourne next year myself.

I play every Sunday night at Lush, helping to host the open mic there, and I play with Afrokoko Roots at Africa House on Fridays (though that's been on and off lately). Aside from that, I do the usual ad hoc corporate & bar gigs, and jam at Jianghu Jiuba most Tuesday nights.

I was in a band with the owner of Jianghu, Wang Tianxiao. We were in a band called Sand. Might pop over on a tuesday for a play.
