My new Fender 70's Jazz

I picked this up last week from Guitar Center. I traded in my Gibson SG reissue, I just couldn't get used to the neck and just could not get a good sound out of the SG. The fit and finish of the SG was extremely high but no matter how much I tried to tweak my Markbass amp I could not get the definition I wanted from the SG. The other basses I play are EBMM, Fender Precision fretless, an old Fender Jazz, a Shergold 4/8 string, a Galveston Lucite 4 string. and a Squier Jazz. I guess I'm just a bolt on neck kind of guy. Anyway picked up this new Fender 70's jazz bass and am just loving it. It is finished nicely, plays well and has a really good growl to it. Guitar Center gave me an even trade for the SG bass and gave me a Fender hardshell case and a Tort pickguard thrown in (originally the bass comes with a white pickguard, looked ok but I prefer the Tort). I'm very happy with the trade and with Guitar Center. Here are a few mediocre pics.

I've already said this a couple times on here, but with the recent price increase I really this will replace the Geddy Lee sig as Fender's best bang-for-the-buck bass. I've only played 2 of these, but they both knocked me out, especially when considering their affordability.

BTW, I definitely like the tort on yours over the stock white. Congrats on a nice bass.

These are great basses! I just got the tri-tone sunburst one on Friday. Great feeling and sounding bass... :bassist: Definitely one of the best non-vintage Fenders I've played..

You thought about any mods? I'll probably end up replacing the pickups. I have Nordy NJ4SV's in my Geddy, so I'm thinking about those or the NJ4SE's for this one..

Congrats on a sweet bass!

I've been seeing Geddy's for $809 at the GC's here in LA. IMHO, these basses sound very similar to the Geddy's. The only big difference I hear between mine is that the 70's is a little thumpier and the Geddy is a little brighter. Just the difference between the maple board on the Geddy and the rosewood board on the 70's, IMO...

EDIT: Forgot to mention that they both have the "70's pickup spacing" with the bridge pup closer to the bridge...

The only things I dislike about my Geddy Lee is the tuners and the maple fretboard, and hissy pickups. I think I am going to dump the Geddy for one of these, seriously. I wonder if GC would do an even trade

The "hum-cancelling" pups are a bit more expensive than the regular ones, but well worth it to me. That's one of the things that drives me crazy about the stock J pickups.

I think the NJ4SV's retail for about $230, but you can probably find them on eBay for less.

The reason I chose the 70's over the Geddy was because the 70's has a rosewood fretboard. The 70's seems to have some more low end which I guess is do to the neck. The Geddy has a different bridge I don't know if it is better per say than what comes on the 70's but I'm thinking about trying a Fender High Mass bridge if I can find one and see what difference it makes. The 70's sounds really good and the pickups are not noisy at all, I plan on keeping the ones that are in it. This is one of the best sounding basses I've ever owned and I have owned too many to count.
