My New Studio Build (perhaps overly detailed)

Hiking, cycling, rock climbing, kayaking, camping, backpacking... So many Pacific Northwest cliches wrapped into one dude.
It sure is awesome living around here, I just can't figure out how you find the time to do it all... and maintain this epic project.
Given that I started this project in June of 2015, I'd say that the key is putting yourself on excessively long timelines for completion
I didn't want to start purchasing gear just yet, but I couldn't pass up the savings that Apogee was offering for extended Black Friday deals on their factory refurbished Element 88 interfaces. I ordered two of them plus the Element hardware remote. Buying now saved me about $1,000 compared to waiting for the studio to be operational.
The integration with Logic Pro X, my preferred DAW, is second to none, and I've always liked Apogee's mic preamps which began as a Rupert Neve design. This isn't as swanky as their Symphony, or even their Ensemble, but these Element interfaces are still fantastic sounding and being Thunderbolt the latency is down in the 1-2ms range. They offer a direct monitoring mode as well that toggles the monitoring for a specific channel to the hardware input rather than after the AD stage, which puts you at theoretically 0ms. A lot of interfaces do this these days, but Apogee's method of integrating it as a toggle right in the Logic mix window is fantastic.

Got the longer outlet cover screws. So...
Take one outlet:
Add an isolation measure:
Screw it on and realize the isolation backer is too big for the covers.
I’m going to cut the pads down a little bit to fit better inside the covers.

Done nail setting all of the upper trim. The goal is to get the nail heads just below the surface of the trim. I did this to the quarter round while installing it, so all that’s left is the base. Nail setting really wears out the hand holding the nail set, so hopefully I can bang this out (pun intended) quickly.

All of the upper trim has been DAP’d. I’ve got other obligations the rest of the day, but I’ll be back at it tomorrow.
Done DAP’ing everything. Before I can get to caulking I need to wipe down all the walls and trim, as well as pull the construction paper off the floors. I am thoroughly unmotivated to do that today, so the caulk will have to wait until next weekend.
- December 7-9: Wipe down, pull paper, caulk
- December 16: Measure and mark for acoustic treatment installation, install outlet covers and isolation measures
- December 21-23: Install acoustic treatments, move equipment into the space
I too am hoping to be ready to record around the end of this month. Mine isn't near so cool as yours.
My interfaces and remote showed up last night. If only I had a place to use them!
Today I’ll be home in the afternoon wiping down all of the trim and the walls. I want it clean before I start caulking the trim. The goal over the weekend is to finish all of the caulking, and if possible get the corner trim pieces built for the corner traps.

Walls and trim all cleaned up in the main room. Still need to take down the vestibule. There was so much dust on the walls that cleaning them up revealed a few spots where I need to touch-up the paint!

So what you’re saying is that I need to shut off my targeting computer, close my eyes and trust the force while hanging the acoustic treatments? I’m down. Hopefully this works out...
Caulking is underway. I got most of the way through the upper side of the upper trim in the main room before I had to call it quits. Due to the geometry of a vaulted ceiling hitting square trim (ie the void is a big triangle) it requires a lot of caulk and there’s bound to be some overrun when feathering it out. Not a big deal, but I will need to go back through and do touch-up painting throughout the studio. Good thing I bought extra paint.
