My New Studio Build (perhaps overly detailed)

What an odd day. The good the bad and the ugly... told slightly out of order for clarity.

The good: Despite still being in pain on both my face and my left heel I was able to install a piece of drip flashing above the HRV inlet and exhaust ducts. This will keep rain from getting into the ducts. I also installed mesh screening over the outlets to keep birds from trying to build nests in the ducts. The HRV is now running constantly to help vent the curing silicone smell out of the studio so I can get in there and keep working.

The ugly: I could not drive staples through the Hardiplank siding cleanly, so the mesh is being held up by mostly driven and completely malformed staples. It looks quite ugly, so I’ll need to replace the mesh and the staples with a more viable solution in the future. For now it’s working well enough.

The bad: I went to my dentist and got a cone scan (3D image of my skull) and got to the bottom of the tooth pain I’ve been having. When my tooth got cracked and subsequently repaired with a crown the nerve to that tooth (lower right first molar) died. The dol scale lists a dying nerve among the highest pain levels that a human can perceive. Suddenly I don’t feel so bad about not getting anything done on Sunday, especially when combined with plantar faciitis on my left heel. It was a painful day. I’m going back tomorrow to have the entire tooth extracted. After a period of healing the tooth will get replaced with an implant that involves having a small titanium screw installed in my jaw bone. I’m not excited about any of this except that it hopefully means an end to this ongoing pain.

My HRV handiwork. That mesh is ugly, but it’ll work for now. I’ll fix it when the weather is nicer.

Trimming down the isolation measures for the outlet covers. You can see how small the cuts are that I have to make to get them to fit behind the plates.

The air gap and extra layer of drywall wasn’t fully compensated for with the extra box like my electrician had hoped for, and as a result the outlets are slightly recessed. That also lets some of the isolation measure poke through. Oh well. Good enough, and they still function.

Outlet covers installed. Attempted to start taping the trim in the main room so I could touch up the wall paint where I cleaned up the caulk. The painters tape wouldn’t stick to the trim and caulk in the corner. Looks like I’ll be freehanding my touch-up paint. Fingers crossed that I don’t screw this up when I get back to work in a couple days after my face has healed from tomorrow’s extraction.

Very little worse than tooth pain. Such small problems that feel huge. I'm surprised you didn't get a route canal done when the tooth cracked if even with a crown the nerve still kicked it - this is what happened to me at the start of the year. Decent chunk of a molar broke off. The nerve cavity wasn't exposed but it wouldn't have taken long for it to get real bad. Nerve out and crown on and it's been fine since. Hope it's not too horrible. I hate the dentist.

Ended up going for the surgical option rather than a root canal. With a root canal you cut off the nerve and blood supply to the affected tooth which leaves you with a dead tooth in your head that will become weak and brittle over time, and eventually it would have to come out anyway. I had the tooth extracted yesterday and in a couple months will get an implant installed to keep the jaw bone from atrophying. After three of the worst nights of my life, with Sunday night into Monday morning being the absolute worst pain I’ve ever been in, I’m feeling considerably better (if not a little swollen and talking funny).

My studio schedule was to take tomorrow and Friday off work and absolutely hammer in there for four days as the final big push. Since I’ve already missed three days of work this week I’m going to change up my plans and go to work tomorrow and for a half a day on Friday. I’ll do some very light work out there later today (probably just some touch-up paint or caulking), and then I should be back at it on Saturday and Sunday. My wife and I have no big plans on Christmas, and she has her own big project that she’s working on, so it’s likely that I’ll work on it on a Christmas as well. If the weather holds I’m still confident that I’ll be done before the end of the year. :hyper:

You couldn’t be more right. I got zero sleep on Sunday night in this horrible cycle of being in too much pain to sleep, it would get worse when lying down or even sitting due to the change in pressure from elevation, and all that while the pain had me so exhausted I could barely stand. Hands down the worst night of my life, which I say with no exaggeration. I’m beyond relieved that the ordeal is over, or at least that part of it is.

One of the worst things I was witness too was when skiing in the forrest with a buddy and he totally wiped himself out. Nothing major. But as he was trying to manoeuvre in deep snow into a position to get back he some how hit himself in the face with the tail of the ski, giving off a loud *clink*.

He laughed and said “did you hear that!?” And as he was about to start laughing until he saw the horror in my face that 3 of his front teeth has just been smashed off.

Later that night he turned grey with pain. Luckily I had an array of painkillers for my knee to help out until he got to the dentist.

Of course you’re 100% correct, but it is very difficult to not try and hit my self-imposed deadline.

I’ve revised my schedule to reflect the reduced number of days and added in some work on Christmas based on my wife telling me that she’s needs to work on her business project. With a little luck I’ll still get it done on time.
