I learned that lesson while I was in college. I’m a casino’s favorite client to say the least.

My New Studio Build (perhaps overly detailed)

I really needed today.
I have been very unmotivated to work on the studio or really do anything with music in general over the last few weeks. I periodically get kind of down on music in general and either need to step away from it for a while (the last time I did that it was about a two year hiatus), or I need to double-down, start something new, work on old projects, and generally find a reason to reinvigorate my passion for all things music, which happens to include studio construction. Recently it’s been the latter. I started working on a symphony that I’ve been pecking away at for the last couple years, and then today I started making good progress on the studio once again!
Motivated by all of this stuff I’ve purchased recently and having a few extra days off over the holidays I decided to kick it in gear with the goal of finishing all of the framing by the time I have to go back to work on January 2nd. I’ll be out of town for some of it, but I’m going to get it done.
Today I picked up the remainder of the supplies I need to finish the framing efforts, minus one set of clamps I’ll need to make an angle cutting jig to tie a truss ledger into the top plates. No biggie. I got all but four of the corner ledgers done and will finish them tomorrow. This was all fueled by Pandora blasting away on my iPhone and a 1,500 watt space heater I picked up earlier today. It’s amazing how motivating a little space heater can be while working in the winter. If I had been smart I would have also picked up a stand light and kept working. Alas, I didn’t, so now that it’s too dark to see what I’m doing I had to call it a night.
Once the framing is done the insulation will absolutely fly, and then I can start hanging the Whisper Clips and hat channel. At that point it will feel like actual studio construction as opposed to just general construction. I’m excited.

You hear about construction site heater related fires. Best not to leave an operating heater unattended.
I received the Delonghi radiant heater that I ordered. The manual, the power cord tag, the additional insert, all stress safety.
I’m pretty obsessive about that sort of thing. It’s only operational while I’m in the space. It also has a tip sensor and an overheat sensor, both of which shut it off if it falls over or temperatures get to unsafe levels.
All of the drywall ledgers for the corners are finished. Tomorrow I should be able to get the remaining wall bays stuffed with insulation and pick up the few missing items I need from Home Depot. When I’m back from my Christmas trip I’ll hopefully be able to get the framing for the ceiling and upper triangle of the partition wall wrapped up. I might even get the partition wall insulated! That might be optimistic, but it’s the goal.
Following some contractor-approved framing suggestions for my partition wall I was able to improvise a faux glue lam and drywall ledger mounted to the side of the scissor truss web above the partition wall. I need to do the other side and put in some lag bolts to provide lateral support and resist the twisting moment applied to the truss web from having the weight cantilevered. It all cane together quickly. Much faster than I expected. I should be able to knock it out when I get back from my Christmas trip.
Lag bolts or through machine bolts with a nut and washer on each side?
A Forstner bit can help recess bolt heads if necessary. First drill with the Forstner, then you have an index mark to drill through.

I wrote lag bolt when what I meant was hex bolt. Washer on each side and a nut on one. No need to recess them as there’s no clearance issues and they’ll be hidden by drywall.
Of course, you are right. My mistake. Not sure if my native language (Swedish) is to blame or just that I find the acoustic treatment much more fun and interesting. (I guess my neighbours would like me to spend more on the isolation part...)
Picked up one of these bad boys last night. Way more affordable than I had anticipated. Now there's no reason for me to not work on the studio after I get home from the office in the evening(s). I'm not back to work until Tuesday, so I'm cautiously optimistic that I'll be able to make some serious progress on things over the weekend. Time to make a big push to close out 2017!

Header/ledgers on the west half of the scissor truss above the partition wall are finished. I’ve got a good system now so I’ll be able to bang out the eastern half tomorrow. I’m nearly out of time before I head out to begin the New Year’s Eve festivities with some friends on an island just across the sound from Seattle.
Finishing 2017 strong and kicking off 2018 even stronger. Have a fun and safe NYE everyone!

Partition wall framing, header assembly and ledgers are done! Two pairs of gable end ledgers and I’ll be done with ALL of the framing tasks on this project.
My goal over the Christmas/New Year’s break was to do the following:
I began adding the gable end drywall ledgers and thought I had completed them on the north end of the building. Sadly I screwed up and mounted them to the wall framing too low. Not sure how that happened, but suffice it to say I screwed up consistently on both sides of the truss and will need to remove them from the wall, which will be a major pain since I didn’t catch the mistake until after nailing them off completely
The insulation of the partition wall was going smoothly, but I ran out of R21 and didn’t want to make a run down to Home Depot.
So, while I didn’t completel ALL of the tasks I set out to complete I still feel good about the progress I made. With the work lights I purchased I can peck away at this after work over the week. By the end of the coming weekend I’m hopeful that all of the tasks on my list above will be complete. After that I’ll be adding damping (Green Glue) and mass (plywood) to the floor assembly.

It is strange that we have passed the shortest day of the year, but I swear in the NW it seems like the days keep getting shorter until February.
