My new SWR Golight. First Impressions.

I had the tried & true SM400 paired with a Goliath II 4x10 and out of all the gear I've gone thru and what I'm playing thru now, that combination was the best tone I've ever had

I've tried a boatload of gear over 25 years of playing, and the best, most present, punchy, warm, round sound i've ever gotten was/is my 1997 SWR SM400s paired with my 1996 Goliath Senior Cab. I have one of the new Genz Benz 210 neo cabs for smaller gigs, and it sounds quite good actually really good. But if i start a/b-ing the Genz with the Goliath the Goliath is far superior for quickness, presence, warmth and punch.

With all this new gear coming out all the time.. i keep thinking, man are my tastes just stuck in the 80s/90s?? I just cant find anything that kicks my butt like that old SWR stuff.. I'm really tempted to sell the Genz 210 and get a golight 210.. Anyone out there tried one of the new swr 210s??

Has anyone had the chance to A/B the Golight 410 against the Genz Benz Uber 410? I really like the GB Uber sound and would like to give the Uber 410 a spin but you'd shave off about 17 lbs and $250 with the Golight 410. From what I've read the Golight has a bit more bottom than the Berg AE410 but with good punch and clarity. This sounds lke a good cab to audition.

Funny you should say that. I just picked up an old SM400 the other day. I have the Golight 2x10 Cab as well. I have been using the Golight 2x10 with the SWR head for rehearsal. It works well. I have been running the amp bridged into the cab at 8 ohms. No complaints here.

Now that being said my Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 has more solid power into the 2x10 than the SM400 for what ever reason.

I picked up the SM 400 for less than $100.00. It was DOA, a friend gave it to me if I would have it fixed and it cost me just under a Benji to have it repaired. It is taking me a little while to figure out where the sweet spots are.

I noticed through the SM400 and 2X10 my Upright really sounds good.

I have the Golight 4x10,2x10, and 1x15. All great cabs. To me the 4x10 sounds identical to the Goliath IV 4x10 which I owned as well.


I'm sure the Genz cabs are stellar as well. For size vs weight vs I'm Old and Fat, I recently acquired two Berg HT112ER cabs that I'm liking. A little more heavy than one would think but nice sounding and tiny.

I've been using Avatar cabs for over 4 years now with neo 4 x 10 speakers. They hold 1000 rms at 8 or 4 ohms depending on the model you purchase. They sound as good or better than the SWR and cost half as much $439 plus $48 to ship. I pump an SWR 750X through them and they're scary good. I've got two Avatar 4X10's one 2X12 and one 2X10. The 2X12 is an amazing cab and makes any 1x18 sound like mud. At 65lbs. for a 4x10, made in America, Eminence deltalights, foster horn, 13 ply baltic birch, rabbit and dado construction, a variety of coverings and grill options, speakon and 1/4 in. inputs, 1000 wts rms, 4 or 8 ohms, they are hard to beat. ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE!!

I have owned Avatar cabs and I would never go back! Vibrating, noisy, B-Farting CRAP!!

No offense to anyone, just *MY* opinion from MY experience.

I now own SWR cabs and LOVE them 110%!!

The SWR's are also deeper cabs for more bottom end. 18.5" deep versus the Avatar at only 15.5".

But I guess... different strokes for different folks!

Remember... you get what you pay for!!
