My new SWR Golight. First Impressions.

Unbeliever you just kind of have to overlook Greenboy.

On Mondays he is all pissy but on Tuesdays he is just Peaches.;)

GB does seem to be up on Speaker Specs/Engineering/Design

That being said GB how is it SWR or Eden is cooking the books?

My Goliath IV 4x10 at it's 800 watt rating would take everything a Crest Audio CA9 could deliver in Bridged Mono Mode at 4 ohms.

It would totally Pummel.

Now I know resistence is reactive at different frequencies and all that Tech Jive stuff but that dang cab would break things up stairs in the House. Stuff would be falling off of things and breaking.

Now as good as that cab sounded I have since flipped to the QSC PLX2 1804 and two of the new SWR NEO Cabs and it is almost as loud. I'm only running two 8 ohm Cabs now at 1200 watts from the QSC but it is plenty loud. I believe the 1x15 I'm using gives me an extra ummmppphhh in the Bottom Booty.

And yes it took Fender/SWR a while to move on the lightweight subject but big companies move slower. That is just how it is. They have much more to loose when they wade out into deep water IMO.

I have owned the Mark Bass neo 410. Absolutelly did not like it. Returned it to G.C. after 2 days of owning it. The speakers could not handle my low B. They farted out.

I owned the Bergantino AE 410. I did not have enough low end for my needs. I loved it's size and weight but sound was more important to me.

I own the Avatar neo 410. You can see what I said about it in my last post.

I own the Epifani UL 410. It was way to high fi for me. Two much high end. Even with the tweeter turned off.
Thank you for that. Makes me feel a little better about the fact that I have one on order. I don't like my Epi cab's sound either. Been a long time SWR user so I rolled the dice and ordered it. I'll be comparing it to my Goliath II and III cabs.

I thought I mentioned their frequency response and sensitivity specs. For many of their products they have not only been outlandish, but impossible with current driver technology. If those figures WERE possible with cone drivers, the world of Sound Reinforcement would be oh so much different.

Others with experience/credibility have also remarked on this a number of times.

That said, though the marketing is spectastically out of bounds, both Eden and SWR have a long line of great-sounding products (though I realize some like other tonal profiles better). In fact, the guy that really got me to start playing bass was someone I did sound engineering with, and when I did sound for bands he was playing with he was usually sporting SWR rigs. I especially remember enjoying working with the Henry 8x8.

OK, well that's just fine-I respect your position. But I'm going to have to ask you to please go ahead and show us this data you speak of, and/or show us where it is. Dave.

I should make it clear that I don't have a problem with how they sound, how loud they go, or how deep they go. My problem is with their specs being completely unrealistic, like claiming they're selling a family saloon that does 250mph and 100mpg. I pointed Aguilar's inaccurate specs on the GS series cabs out to Dave and he looked into it and corrected them - that's what SWR need to do!

SWR were a pioneering company in the development of 4x10" plus tweeter designs and they don't need to make silly claims to sell cabs.

I told you where it is. On driver datasheets and in cab sim programs. Load up the most sensitive drivers you can find from any brand, money no object. From the leading edge companies in the world. Then look at LF response. The incredibly sensitive drivers don't have anything going on below 100 Hz, sometimes even 200 Hz, and they are NOT designed to do BASS. There is NOTHING out there from anybody that can make an enclosure do what Eden and SWR routinely claim. And you would think that these driver companies have tried their hardest, because they SURE do want to sell drivers! They want to sell to end customers, and to companies like SWR and Eden.

C'mon, blue pill takers! I know you just want to keep on sleeping. If you took the red pill your world view would be shattered, that view that somehow the tiny companies like SWR and Eden have done things that the amassed knowledge, wealth, and effort of an entire scientific community based on audio research, and an entire industry of which bass cab companies are a drop in the ocean, somehow has not discovered yet (even though any canny realize that if Eden and SWR have had this supposed Superior Technology for decade, that any decent reverese engineering or industrial espionage could quickly duplicate it).

I had to applaud Aguilar a year or two ago when presented with this. Aguilar took the high road and revised their sensitivity figures DOWNWARD to realistic numbers for their enclosure products. That took a lot of courage, being surrounded by many companies who they must compete against who are NOT using realistic figures, and a market with many customers in it who are clueless about this and just see that "high numbers are better".

The sad and funny truth of this whole matter is, that all 10" drivers suitable for bass cab use tend to be within a dB or two of each other in sensitivity, regardless of what company has its logo on the enclosure. Only cabs like Acmes, which sacrifice midrange sensitivity for LF extension, fall outside that range.

Shattered? I think not. :rollno:

When I buy a Cab I do not run checking Specs to death in the first place. Wattge is a direct concern for what to pair it with and the rest is how it sounds.

I do not care what the actual Specs of my Golight 2x10 and 1x15 are. All I am concerned with is can I crank them with my PLX2 1804 and get Earth Shattering Sound Results. The answer is a Big Fat Definative Yes!

Also as a side note, I go play some Booteek High End Cabs that are way exspensive and find they are no better than the Cabs I currently have. :p

Have a very freakin good day.:)

Didn't call them out on their SOUND now, did I? In fact I said I'd quite enjoyed hearing a lot of SWR rigs. I called 'em out on their specsmanship.

How quickly some forget even when they have asked the question themselves ; }

Darling I did not forget. I knew what you called out. My point was for many a Bass Player they rarely pay any attention to Specs when a cab is giving up the goods. :bassist:

I definitely want to try these cabs out. SWR 4x10s have such a great sound, I only quit using them because of the weight.

They are definately worth trying out. What I have found so far with these cabs are the following.

#1 They really sound like their heavier bretheren.

#2 They are extremely light, not just a NEO thrown in a traditional Cab. Lighter wood, carpet, grill, handles, and perhaps more.

#3 This is the biggy for me. They sound every bit as good as some of the well known higher end Cabs that are twice the price. I'll leave the direct comparison out as to stave off the shyte storm.

Now so far I have found one big minus that I'm not liking about these cabs and it is a problem.

Problem A

They made the traditional spring loaded handles out of aluminum rather than steel and they vibrate at certain frequencies.

I have yet to find a good solution for this so far.
The handles in the 2x10 vibrate at diffrent frequncies from each other as well as the handles in the 1x15 vibrate at yet other frequencies.

Now perhaps I need to contact my Dealer or SWR about it but was thinking I should be able to fix this. Will see.

I actually strongly dislike most/all of the high end cabs out there, particularly the most famous NEOs. I'm hoping the golights just sound "normal". I just want that tight, growly, crispy SWR 410 sound ... nothing weird.

I'd be interested to see if anyone has miked one up and done a recording? I always loved putting an SM-57 off center away from the tweeter on a goliath II and blending that with a direct signal. Its like the simplest recording setup ever, and sounds great in the mix.

I am glad that I could bring you some peace of mind with this forum. I am totally happy with this Golight 410. I really thought I was doomed to owning big heavy cabs for the rest of my life until this one came along.

I have not had the problem with the handles vibrating. I do hate those type of handles though. I wish they were the plastic inset handles like the Eden cabs have. But I am being way to nit picky.

Not sure why mine are.

Part of it may be when pushing the Ultra Bottom with the Bass Intensifier with the M2 but it's the latest SWR Pre so you'd think they have tried these through the cabs.

I have not had much time to think/look about it so when I do I'll post more about it.
