It looks like they are drilled and tapped on the sides, too.

My guess is they will be only half as effective mounted as they are currently:

They're supported rail bearings to be mounted so that the opening faces a rail support. In this case the rail supports (bolts from gantry to rail) will be facing the rear of the gantry. That last picture was from the eBay seller. They've got the bolts in holes that are actually for set screws to adjust lash on the bearing. It confused the heck out of me at first. The Seller is a resale company so I think they just stuck them together best they figured.

Very cool, scottyd. Can't wait to see what comes off this machine.

What are you planning to use for machine control software? I've been using Linuxcnc for a few years now. Works perfectly and you can't beat the price ;)

Thx, I've got a trial version of Mach3 that I'm playing around with. I like it, haven't come close to maximizing the g-code line restraint on it yet. I'll have to check out the Linuxcnc too.

For my z axis I decided to use a different style of bearings. These linear slide bearings have a lower profile and will help keep the router tucked into the gantry. By design I think they will also have better side load capabilities being and that they will be mounted pretty close together that's probably a good thing... Plus I scored them for cheap on the Ebay..

Fwiw I think that these bearings and slides would be best to use on the whole machine.

I just checked out your site, you've got a new fan! :)

Can you explain the accordion type covers, I realize they're to keep debris off the moving parts but did you build them or where did you find them?
