My preamp journey

I think the mini board is done. I haven't changed it since I got the Bassrig back. I'm extremely happy with it, it's reliable and easily portable. Checks all the boxes!
C4 octave?

Details on JSH eq only?

C4 octave?
I use it for octave and synth. I was using if for Mutron emulation, but I managed to fit the Micro IV onto the board and I prefer that. I do a lot of pop, rock, and 80's music so the C4 really helps.

EQ and the DI on the JHS. The high pass is not voiced for bass and useless as far as I am concerned. The distortion sounds too "scratchy" (for lack of a better term) to my ears - I never really enjoyed the whole "overdriven console" anyways. The EQ is incredible - it's like a mini version of the Alix. Awesome for fretless, very natural sounding, and lets the beefiness of the Bassrig come through.

The DI is great - the transformer is a good one!

...I can see you tried for a bit on the bottom row and with the Noble and the Alix before giving in to old habits and tossing the rest in that pedalboard sized dice cup of yours.

I think this is a big improvement :)

And my slimmed down big board. @el murdoque looks a lot better, doesn't it :)

Always a pleasure checking in to see your various board arrangements and updates. One day I'll have to pick up a fat drive if I see one.

I was wondering about your Stella comp settings though... do you generally stick to those settings? I noticed that your Threshold is set super low compared to me. I usually run it at about 10 o'clock and my basses are on the hot side.

Perhaps you use it more as a sweetener. I was also surprised to see how you set the Gain and preamp exactly as I do!

I'm trying to decide on whether or not to have the New DITOS transformer installed in mine. Sounds pretty good on the demos...

Thanks brother, I appreciate the kind words! I mostly use the Stella as a sweetener and a limiter close to the end of the chain. I don't normally keep the threshold at that setting tho - I typically run it quite a bit higher :)

The Fatdrive is amazing. It's not the most practical and I'm going to have to end up finding a custom case for my pedalboard, but man is it worth it. One of the few pedals that I sold then ended up buying again. Totally worth it. I lucked out - I picked this new one up at an estate sale for a great price, then when I opened it up I found out that it has one of those holy grail NOS tubes in it. I want to say an old RCA ...

I realized that although I tried a @Sushi Box FX London Underground and a Particle Accelerator that I had never tried the UA. There was one in stock, so UA on the way! I miss my PA a lot, I should not have sold it. I have a need for a tube pre now that can get a little dirty, so looking FWD to getting it.

Nice, was going ask how the Fat drive compares to Sushi boxes that you've tried... and then you bring this up.

I'm seriously considering trying a UA, but im pretty sure the high current requirements would require me to get a new power source which is a little offputting... looking forward to hearing your assessment!

I loved the PA, and regret selling it. I think the direction that I was going at the time was mini, and I kept the AMT. I liked the AMT, but it wasn't playing well with others so I sold that.

The Fatdrive is the king of the pedal Fender tone stack preamps as far as i am concerned, but it's also huge and takes full wall power, and also isn't being made any more. IIRC the PA plus a pedal with a transformer (I was using Lightning Boy at the time) came pretty close. I'm hoping the UA is an improvement on that.

I got my UA a few days ago. Love it. I wish I still had the PA to compare it to, but it seems that the UA is a little easier to dial in some smooth dirt.

I'm using both a Finally and the UA as add-ons to my Helix Stomp XL. I love the Helix, but I also love the ability to change my tone with minimal fuss. And of course anyone that knows me knows that I won't shut up about how much I love the Fender tone stack :-)

Direct comparison UA to the Fatdrive - the FatDrive is still the Fattest. I seriously haven't heard a pedal preamp that compares to the sheer bootiness of the FD. The UA is the closest I've seen so far though. One thing that the UA does better is dirt. The FatDrive does the Fat part really well, but not so much the Drive part (at least as far as getting some dirt). It could be the tube, but the UA is easier to dial in some smooth grit - just the right amount.

As usual I have questions LOL PIGTRONIX Fat Drive? UAD Max?

SIB Fatdrive - large format tube driven Fender TMB pedal - class A, transformer driven, no longer made and getting harder and harder to find

Sushibox UA Underground Accelerator - the current SB offering with the Fender tone stack, also tube driven. Much smaller format.

A new challenger has emerged.

I realized I have been on a little journey myself. Here are the preamps I’ve used since I got back into playing about 10 years ago:

Hartke Bass Attack
Two Notes LeBass
Sansamp VTDI
Sansamp YYZ
Sushi UA
Joyo American
Laney Digbeth
Sushi Dreamcatcher

Have a Catalinbread RAH incoming.

What's your opinion on the Digbeth?

I like it. Lots of good tones to dial in. The tube emulation dirt is better than I thought it would be. I like it but I’m going to move it because I ended being able to get a new Sushi Dreamcatcher and that thing is awesome. It will stay as the big #1 for now and I will have the American for when I want to pull out a pick and just get really grindy and nasty. Hopefully the RAH will be good and able to stay. I wouldn’t mind keeping the Digbeth, just need to justify some funds. On the Digbeth, you can mix the tube and fet channels and get some great stuff. The only downside I could find is the mids are a little harder to dial in like I like them. But, there are plenty of mid options on the pre.
