This is exactly what I'm looking for.
i have been blowing through pedals lately in search of my own face pummeling distortion and i got my latest pedal in the mail today and its i am my happiest right now with my sound.
MXR doubleshot distortion, it has 2 different distortions on it and its really easy to get a killer sound and you can set one level to a lighter distortion and the other to painful. i didn;t notice any real loss of my low end but i also run it through a POG but it sounded good without it as well. i scored mine on ebay for $40.
my friend walked out of my backroom after i started playing it and said it sounded like satan yelling. that made me happy

This [Fatman with tone knob] is exactly what I'm looking for.
Seems like a no-brainer to me. The Fatman was my first thought when I saw the thread title, and then you said it wasn't quite the ticket. But if/since he makes one with a treble rolloff, BAM! Git'er'done.
I may have to buy exactly the same thing for myself, as the treble was a bit hard for me to handle too, playing through tweetered cabs as I do.
After trying many (Fulltone, tonebender, Boss, GK Diesel Dawg), the one that totally did it for me, and the only one to have passed the gig trial succesfully is the Xotic bb Preamp. It can be gritty, heavy, light, whatever.. but always cuts through the mix. I was pretty struck by it the first time I plugged it. Fulltone was close as well, but I don't really like its sound, although it was an old version. Maybe the one with the 3-way switch is more usable.
As for the GK, it sounds great and is prolly very cool to record with, but it sounded like I stopped playing every time I engaged it while playing with the band..

The Fatman/V2 is something special, I was just growing tired of having to adjust my treble settings on the amp and/or bass when I'd use it. No big deal when between songs, but for short passages in the middle of tunes it gets a little awkward, especially when I have to trail off a distorted lead and jump back into a clean groove within the same beat. This should solve everything, hooray!
Of course, I'm still paying close attention to every post in this thread and will research many of the suggestions further. Then if I ever get a job again... but now I'm getting ahead of myself.
i use the marshall guv"nor overdrive for dirty bits using the jazz bass,
the low controls make up for the lost freuencies and sounds nice and distorted.

have that pedal, really don't like it,
check this pedal out, just was looking at demos to find a good pedal, and am really loving the versatility of this pedal and ALOT of different tones, tentacle love super fuzz
I have the distortion version only of the Fatman. I can put up some clips if you like. Also, check out the recent clips I put up of the AMT Communist Pig - very nice.

The thing is made for low tuned guitars and it has a ton of low end on bass too. If you want to hear it on bass, just click the link in my sig and listen to the songs. I used an Epiphone Thunderbird tuned to drop B on those recordings and we just mic'd my 1x18, had my 4x10 above it blasting too though.
