N.B.A. thread

Amazing game, and a variation on a very old theme: Total team effort trumps unbelievable single performance by amazing superstar. LBJ was great tonight, and Tristan Thompson was a bundle of energy and will. But the Warriors played as a team, and their bench was far superior to what the Cavs could offer. In then end, 10 guys were better than 8, especially when 2 of the 8 didn't score.
Bench box score: Golden State 34, Cleveland 9.

Didn't realize until tonight how much better than Bogut Mozgov was, but I was pleasantly surprised by how well Speights and Barnes played. I hope Irving's injury wasn't too serious - I want this to be a real series. Game 1 did not disappoint.

Yeah maybe i just didnt pay too much attention to him before but Mozgov is a pretty good talent. Cuts to the basket so quick like if he was a wing sometimes, has a nice soft touch when close to the rim, and can actually MAKE his free throws.

But man if Kyrie Irving cant go i dont see this being competitive at all.

Yeah, I don't think I'd ever even noticed Mozgov before, but his speed going to the hoop was really impressive for a big guy.
Unfortunately he seemed to miss a couple of what should have been easy dunks...and I was told by some far more attentive Cleveland fans that that's not atypical.

Kyrie Irving fractured knee cap. Out 3-4 months. I expected a legendary LeBron to show up and win this series for Cleveland, so far he did in game 1. But what he would have to do now is too ridiculous to even be possible. Congrats Warriors your NBA 2015 champions.

I'm bummed to hear about Kyrie. But don't line up your confetti for the W's just yet. I thought they could win it before, and still think so - even without the injury, LBJ turned in one of his best playoff performances, the W's didn't show up until the 2nd quarter, and they still managed to win.
I think the likelihood of their winning just went up - but it's the Finals, and crazy things happen.

Yeah but one thing I've noticed is there are times where luck just goes for one team the whole postseason and it seems as if everything went right for them like if it was meant to be. The Mavs title comes to mind. When they made a comment last night during the game I was like "wow, I didnt even realize that". Steph Curry is the warriors weak link when it comes to there greatly ranked defense. But the warriors have lucked out in that each opponent has had an injured or completely out PG.

Jrue Holiday was barely coming back from being out most of the season and only really played very few minutes the last 2 games for New Orleans. Mike Conley gets his faced caved in in the 1st round and I was surprised he even played. Patrick Beverly, probably the best defensive point guard in the league, out for the season. Kyrie Irving was playing great even though he had his injuries, done for the season. Not taking anything away from them but it seems like it was meant to be for them this year. But your right anything can happen.

James' efficiency as a scorer is clearly down during these playoffs, but I think he's been passing and rebounding better than ever lately. Also, GS was certainly the better defensive team during the regular season, but with Thompson getting Love's minutes now I think the Cavs might be just as good on D (while sacrificing some offense in the process).

To be sure, I'm a Curry fan and I'm rooting for GS in general (and I want my boy David Lee to get a ring, even if he barely plays). But I don't see this as the walkover Vegas is expecting.
*ahem* And this was without Irving. Once again, an injury resulted in a defensive upgrade for Cleveland, and James--even though he shot poorly--kept the offense going just enough to pull out the win.

Btw, still rooting for GS, but the uncalled hack on Iguodola was absurd.

Cleveland gutted the win out and deserved it. GS was not made to win these low scoring games, and when the league MVP shoots 25% for the night, this is going to happen sometimes. The uncalled hack on Iggy was a bad no-call, but as VG pointed out, James also traveled big as day before the foul. Good game, interesting series. Liking this so far.

BTW, how many dumb plays can JR smith make in one game? Geez.

Man maybe i spoke to soon? Still dont think Cleveland has enough to win 4 games, not being this thin right now. But Lebron keeps.......Lebroning? Lol

Sticking with random stats that just made me say WOW. Game 1 Cleveland makes only 1 field goal in OT, Loose horribly. Game 2 Cleveland makes only 1 field goal in OT, escape with the win and homecoart advantage. Crazy

Mozgov was terrific again, badly outplaying Bogut and his backups combined. For the Cavs, Delly stepped up and brought a lunch pail. Klay T and Barnes came to play and Iggy played hard, but the Dubs need production from their bench. It was the kind of ugly game I don't really enjoy watching - Lebron going one on one over and over and parading to the free throw line - except at crunch time. Still glad that that there's some fight in this series.

Oh, and just because we're a bunch of couch jockeys talking about the game, may I add that Shumpert hasn't shown half enough game to justify the attitude/persona he shows up with. Harden can rock the beard because he's bringing game, but Shumpert is doing nothing to justify the Buckwheat flat top. Bring the game, or clip the mane. :D

Ball control won that game. GS going 8-33 from three point land is nuts. That is putting a ton of self inflicted pressure on your offensive rebounders (sic). No need to keep launching like that. Just keep the game in front of you and play smart. LBJ milked the shot clock and slowed the game way down. Very smart, but 50 minutes a game doesn't sound feasible if GS can keep him running the entire time for the next 3 or 4 games.

I'm surprised about them going 1 and 1 in two close games that probably shouldn't have been that close. LBJ is a full grown man, and he is doing everything that he can, but if GS plays smart he will have little to say in the outcome.

Anyone else see Skip Bayless' comments about this?

“I set my bar high for the man who is the best basketball player on this planet, and I’m here to tell you that occasionally LeBron’s overall numbers, which look sensational once again because they add up to a triple-double, can camouflage what really happened — because last night he continued to fail repeatedly, and I’m going to count the ways for you right now, in late-game, closeout situations.
2-for-12 was LeBron James in the fourth quarter and overtime. He had three total assists in the fourth quarter and overtime. Not bad, but not great…. [at the end of regulation] LeBron had a tough but decent shot. A left-handed layup that was clean, and he missed it. I’m thinking that the best player on the planet should have made that shot. Some how, some way, if you’re not going to get fouled and you get the ball that close to the rim, you should put it down.”

Professor Skip Bayless gives LeBron James a C+ for his Game 2 triple-double | For The Win

If Curry makes just 2-3 of his missed shots, the game doesn't go in to overtime. GS up 2-0.

Cleveland can't survive counting on James scoring 40+ pts a game. I'm sure Steve Kerr is happy with LeBron going off as long as the rest of the team is kept under control. At the end of regulation, Lebron had almost half of his team's points. That's not going to cut it game after game.

The difference in last night's game was Curry not being able to hit water if fell out of a boat. If Cleveland can keep the pressure on Curry, the games will be close and then we'll see who knows how to win in crunch time.

So far, I've seen GS continue to play their style no matter what part of the game it is. Not Cleveland. And LeBron needs to stop complaining to the refs because he didn't succeed. The only legitimate beef he had was the foul on the jump ball. He's been in the league long enough (as well as 5 Finals in a row) to know that there will be contact at this point.

Personally, I think GS lost the game more than Cleveland won it. GS blocks James' shot, gets the rebound and throws the ball away. Then Curry shoots an airball with under 10 secs left. Room Service!

^^^This. I'm sure Curry's worst detractors aren't beating him up as badly as he's beating himself up right now: The dude had an off night, a really off night, a ridiculously bad Son-You-Suck, How-Did-You-Ever-Become-League-MVP-Shooting-Like-That? off night. And yet the Warriors lost by only 2 points. In OT.

Woe be unto the Cavs if Curry ever has an on night.
