NAD: SUNN Coliseum 300

Yes, the whole thing was coated in a fine layer of dust, dirt, etc. And the posts were scratchy. I got it all cleaned up... and its nice and tidy.

I fired it up last night (cause of this thread) and i'd forgotten... i love how old Sunn Solid State gear smells. :hiding:

You might want to consider taking it to a good amp tech.
At vol "4" it should blow the windows out of your house, even with one cab.
These things are no question killer LOUD!

Even my little tube 200s will cause household mayhem at 4.

At 4, it's at soft talking level. definitely isn't right.

I'm going to clean it, and if that doesn't work.....my skills aren't to the point where I could diagnose a sick amp....so I'll have to take it in.

I was almost hoping the thing rattling around inside was a part so I could just replace it.:o

sorry the pics suck.....

Haven't cleaned it yet....will do tomorrow. Gotta get some compressed air.

Okay, got it all cleaned out.

Seems the same....one thing that didn't jump out at me before....

With all of the EQ controls at noon....is the amp still loud at 4?

Once I start boosting the EQ controls.....I really start to get some volume.

Is that normal?

Yeah, the amp will be a good deal louder when you boost the eq points. That's the whole thing about the individually preamped eq circuit ppints - if they're all completely down the amp will output nothing or barely anything. But if you start really cranking those things, the amp will get significantly louder in a hurry. That's one of the reasons that this amp feels so powerful even though it's only 200 watts @ 4ohms. So yeah, if you need extra output, you can crank the eq and get extra volume.

Okay, then the amp is fine. :)

I started with all of the controls at noon......I just assumed it wasn't working properly....plus the stuff rattling around inside made me even more suspicious.
I naively just assumed it wasn't working properly. Didn't really mess with the controls in fear of damaging it. Having no experience with these amps, and no word of this phenomenon, it would be easy to jump to this conclusion.

After messing with it more, I'm pretty happy with it.......not the sweetest sounding amp I've tried up unto this point....but probably one of the more flexible.

Is the power amp clipping light bad? :)

No, I'm pretty sure that all controls at noon = flat in this amp. Since the eq controls are basically active, and they are not interactive with each other the same way that older amps are, I would assume that noon pretty much means flat, and to me, that's what it sounds like.
