NAD! SVT7 Pro (also comparing it to my Streamliner 900)

Of course, that opens up a whole other can of worms. Is an amp's 'baked in' tone determined by having the tone controls set at noon? Greater minds (and ears) than mine will need to figure this one out. :)

The settings you describe there do sort of reverse it's baked in curve.

Perfectly stated... I like the Ampeg better. I'm a Mesa M9 guy myself, but aren't we all always keeping an ear to the ground...

Nice clips John When I was amp shopping it came down to the Streamliner 600 and the 7PRO. I chose the Streamliner over the 7PRO because of reliability issues that I had heard about. I will not get rid of my Streamliner but hearing those clips makes me want the 7PRO again.

BTW, for the fun of it, i tried a little tube rolling with the only tube in my 7pro this afternoon. i was comparing them to the JJ ECC83S that came stock in it.

first, i tried a NOS Mullard ECC83. then a Sovtek LPS, and a JJ ECC803S. all of them took a bit of the 'snappiness' and brightness out of the amp.

the Mullard gave it a bit more low end fullness, a smoother 'airy' top end, and made it sound more 'vintage SVT-ish'.

the 803S sounded pretty similar to the Mullard, but just a little tighter, but was a tiny bit microphonic (but still completely usuable since it didn't create any issues).

the LPS Sovtek also sounded nice (rounder and fuller but was just a little more microphonic than the 803S. i ended up putting the stock tube back in it since i'm kind of fond of it's tightness and it seems that they voiced the amp for it.

Thanks for posting an EQed Streamliner clip. The "flat" (controls at noon) clip sounds fairly thick and scooped... the new EQed GB clip sounds pretty nice, maybe even a bit more natural than the SVT7... still a bit of tonal signature remaining though.

Upon reflection, the "nooner" Streamliner clip is somewhat reminiscent of an SVT with ultra-lo engaged. IMO, Genz Benz ought to flatten out that "baked" in EQ, while still retaining the basic character of the amp. The way it is now, it seems as if most players are having to make some serious EQ adjustments just to find a basic tonal starting point. As for the SVT-7 PRO, the clip sounds nice... but isn't blowing my socks off. Might even sound a little sterile in comparison. Of course, actually auditioning the two amps would probably lead to different impressions.....

Both sound really good...funny how your EQ on the Streamliner ended up sounding more like the 7 Pro nooned. Wasn't dead on but it sounded really good. Hard not to dig both because they really come off well, but the 7 Pro has a thickness in the mids I really dig. Both of them represent a quantum leap from your typical micro, though. Just the fact that you can hear differences in the tubes is pretty major.

since i can't record at a level that won't overload the zoom's built-in mics, IMO, you really have to play them live at a little louder level to really get an idea of just how good these heads sound. both of them actually do 'knock my socks off' ;). maybe i'll try recording a clip using an EV RE20 instead of the H4n's little condensors and see if that makes any difference. later today i'll also drag out one of my SVT's (which i love) and record a clip of it for comparison.

You ought to try one of the NOS RCA 7025's from the Streamliner in there.
