Sounds like you don't keep them long enough to die on you, Jim ;)

If it makes you feel better, I see a lot of 4 and 5 year old 7 Pros out there still going along, so don't give up hope yet.

Awe, man. That sucks. Sorry to hear it.

I sat yesterday and read almost this entire thread (and listened to all of the sound samples) specifically because I'm an SVT user/fan, I have a Streamliner that I gig regularly, and have been considering adding a 7 Pro to the arsenal.

After this report, I think I'll stick with what "ain't broke."

What is the deal with the all the issues these things seem to have anyway? I would think that of all companies, Ampeg would be able to do the class D thing at least as well as any other manufacturer, if not better. I would surmise that the TB community represents a reasonable cross section of bassists, and it seems that there is a disproportionately high number of threads pertaining to the failure of the newest crop of light weight Ampegs (7 Pro, PF500, specifically).

I have always loved Ampeg, and would love to use some of their newer stuff, but I find this all a bit disconcerting. My frame of reference is the trusty SVT350 that was my main gigging/touring amp for 10+ years. The thing has run for 20-30 hours a week for at least as long as I've owned it, and is still kicking today with no signs of stopping. The only time it ever failed on me was when it got dropped down a 1/2-flight of stairs, and even then, the only thing that broke was the master volume knob. If I could get a newer Ampeg and have the confidence that it was solid enough to put up with the ab/use that my 350 has, I'd buy in a heartbeat.

While I've had many amps, the top 10 have stayed for at least 15 years at a time.

Remember the Peavey 400 with round knobs, the Acoustic 450 & 370, Ampeg V4B, SVT, SVP, B15, MBLMII, SWR, TH500, Alembic Pre, Ampeg 1500 watt power amp, Fender Bassman?
NEVER had one let me down although I did have to replace all the tubes in the Bassman once!

OTOH, the only one that does it for me compared to the 7 Pro is the SVT.
(Insert geezer voice here), and I'm not carrying that monster to a $75 gig anymore...

I pulled the main poweramp board (it's a pretty simple process) and it looks great on the bottom (no burnt traces, thank god). the resistor that cooked (R46 on the power amp pcb) was a 1 ohm 1W metal film one. I just removed it, measured it and it measures approx. 2 meg ohms now!
I have 2 watt ones in stock but I don't want to put a 2W one in there in case it allows too much current and blows up something else, since i'd rather have a resistor blow than another component or a trace.

I salute you JimC !!!Keep that Streamliner & a VERY simple solution to getting a "different" tone is to drop the pedal of your choice into the preamp in & use the Streamliner as a 900w poweramp. :bassist:

Sorry mate,
I never bought the Streamliner; it's the 7-Pro that I like and am scared of...

JK - Amazing that you had quick access to the part and sorry to hear the bad news.
Do you assume that the fix will be a board swap as shop time is too valuable for a warranty repair?
For that matter, I wonder if the factory even repairs returned boards these days.

If you can, take a sharp photo so we can see what changes there might be on a new board.

This is why there is no Ampeg listed in my gear profile. Waiting for the other shoe to drop is not a good feeling. Sorry for your troubles, John. :(

I have no idea if they'd swap the board but I don't think so. it may be a simple fix.

here's a pic of the internals with the red arrow indicating the resistor (R46) that cooked:

I just spoke to a friend that has a big amp repair shop; authorized repair for everybody.
He said that they usually go for a component swap under warranty. Not Ampeg but another brand pays $40 per hour for warranty work which is well below the hourly for most shops. After about an hour of diagnosis they decide if it can be fixed easily or if it'ds a board swap. He said sometimes the manufacturer wants the board back; presumably to get credit from whomever made it for them.

They had a Prophet 9 in about a pieces when I left!
A million little discrete components and the tech found the problem 15 minutes after disassembly.

never had amps die very often for decades ( ampegs, Sunn, Gk hartke) , but the last 5-10 years has been a sh$t show. new eden - 3 months, gibson trace 3 times in 2 years, ampeg pf 500 cutout issue went back for svt7 pro.......legion power amp 2 X , cheap mixers etc.... - other than the gibson issue which is a whole other story the connection seems to be China....
