Kindness, Respect, and the other common courtesies that used to be common in our society and in the world have diminished in my lifetime. We are a much more cynical and quick to criticize today and it is pervasive in our popular culture.

There is - IMO - too much of that reflected here - that is not to say there are not many friendly and helpful people here - but we have those that often argue and flame about insignificant things.

I know that being kind and respectful is self perpetuating - meaning that when you act this way it returns to you and creates the same and tends to influence others in the same way.

I do enjoy that tongue in cheek ribbing and joking here and that is not what I am saying - being funny and kidding are different than being intentionally cynical, critical and unkind.

As I have said before - we are blessed with the privilege of making music - whether professional or for our own enjoyment - and it is such a waste of this resource to spend time here in a negative way - when we can do so much as a community for the the Bass in general and the community as a whole.

It takes a big man to offer an apology. In today's culture of, "I want it now" and "It's all about me"... It is nice to see an attempt to return to civility.

I think you will find that there are many warm, generous and knowledgeable people on the TBDB site who are more than willing to help anyone as long as a certain amount of kindness and civility are displayed. Many of us are a bit older, we've seen quite a bit and we are "Old School" when it comes to respectful behavior.

Sounds good. I think that any productive discussion is based on mutual respect. I'd only add that sometimes posts sound way harsher than they are meant to because the interweb cannot communicate vocal inflections that are important to understanding things like sarcasm.

The other thing is that I think folks need to grow a thicker skin. It doesn't mean that we should not be respectful to eachother. Quite the contrary in fact. We should be comfortable enough (with ourselves and others) that a little bit of gentle ribbing or flat out disagreement are not taken as an insult. Shoot, my family, my wife, or my friends can call me a moron or an a$$ or whatever if I am, in fact, being one of those things. I know they only have the best of intentions.

The other part of it is if you are losing sleep over the ramblings of some nameless faceless idiot on the 'puter maybe it is time to unplug. My 2 cents.

Way to often people get very stubborn and dig their heels in... the OP didn't. If that's cute to you cool.

Like I said earlier, some of us have actually had fairly successful music careers. We've been there. Read my profile if you like. Respect is big and treating others respectfully is the way it's done. That is not to say we can't rib each other, tease each other and generally have a good time. (sometimes at one anothers expense) However, teasing and kidding is a far cry from name calling and using insults to make your point.

This is a cool place. Let's keep it that way!:cool:

Sorry for barging in from the BG side... Just wanted to say it's been my experience that over here on the DB side it seems like normal culture to call names, put people down, and say "**** you" to anyone who disagrees. Moreover, it seems like the people who spit the worst venom are lionized here as some sort of heroes. The most beloved people are the meanest ones.

That's part of why I mostly stay over in the BG side, even though I want to learn DB. I just don't want to learn it from you people.

I don't believe that there is even a soupcon, (tiny bit), of venom in my posts here. However, you do end your post with what could reasonably be considered a barb, jab or a mildly insulting conclusion.

Maybe it's just cultural.... I give up!

It's prolly that the EB side play's like a public space and everyone is used to strangers walking in and acting like they know somebody. It's sure to have way different social standards, status quo, and moderation.

There is never any venom on the DB side when either (1) there is familiarity among those talking or (2) there is deference shown by the stranger/uninitiated. I don't really care to check but don't expect this to hold for the BG side.

What I see here is plenty of threads are wrecked by misunderstandings between those who know the room and those who don't.

I'm actually kind of peeved on this whole topic since Paul stopped posting after that Public Art Funding Support thread. Sure he broke the rule or whatever and I am sure he took his wrist slap smiling but why should he get flamed by strangers in his joint and then through PM.

If you ask me the DB side would be a more peaceful place if it were a bit more separated from the BG side in terms of Website design.

And Bongo you don't name names but all but Imply you mean Paul and Ed and and Phill and Marc and Damon and Drub and the dozens of others here who have earned an opinion here and have the balls to back it up. Here. Where it is pertinent. Everyone has the right to an opinion. Some opinions to put it plainly have more value (in said place) than others.

If you don't like the leaders of a tribe why come and get upset by it?

I don't mean no strangers. Just no strangers starting arguments. And that is a tough order so why not just eliminate a few of links to the DB side from the site in gerneral (like the "New Threads" part of My Talkbass which seems to strat alot of trouble)

So what's your point in making this post? You want someone to call you a name or put you down to prove your point?

There are a ton of contributors over here that have a wealth of information and real world experience to share. I feel fortunate to have found a site where guys like John, Ed, Trey, Paul, Chris, Marcus, Phil, Damon, Sam, and many other high level players post regularly. They, and dare I say we, have dedicated countless hours (and tons of emotion) to the DB. Passion. Maybe sometimes some stuff translates as harsh because of it. Oh well. I'd rather have a high level player tell me I'm an idiot than to be stroked by a novice.

I just wanted to say some of the important thing I have learned by checking out TBDB "dark side" (as I have seen referred to but not in a negative connotation in multiple posts)...............

Spyros........ I love them and regret the days I had Super sensitives on my DB. I'll never recover those days back.

K+K and all their great products... I love that Bassmax.

The evil ring finger on the left hand....... I stilll use it but less and less every time I practice.

The importance a bridge set up and sound post placement.......my DB thanks you very much.

Buying my used Genz Benz Intro 90....... so clean I could cry.

and a whole lot more stuff.................

I do thank TalkBass and all of it's participant's for the valuable information I have gained.

I'm sorry if my thread has lead to disarray, it's not my will I wish as it may,
just something I posted on my free time today.

+1 To everything. I hate the naming names things because their is always one more name. Gotta show some props sometimes though.

Also their is never anything but positivity on this site amongst parties who's first concern is passion for the Double Bass.
