Double Bass Name calling, put downs, and cynicism.

if all you want over here is to insult and pick a fight, please let it die.
Let's just live and let live.

I certainly didn't come here for any such reason. In fact as I stated in my first post, I only came over here to say how much I would otherwise want to be here if it weren't such a hostile environment. For example how that one guy responded to my post by calling me a Neanderthal just because he disagreed with my statement about the NEA. Looks like he's deleted that post, or it was deleted for him. FWIW I have worked directly with the NEA, and some of my profs back at SFAI did too and they spoke on it often, so I have both personal knowledge and education on the subject. Regardless, even if my opinion was just hot air, the civilized thing to do (whether Paul or Mr. Homo Erectus) would have been to say "I disagree, and here's why I disagree". I'm happy to have a civilized disagreement with anybody, that's healthy.

To the majority of you, I apologize for saying "you people". That was in fact too much of a slur against the people here who aren't hostile- so again, I am sorry I said that. But just the fact that many of you know each other does not give the hostile ones among you the right to be hostile to people they don't know.

The fact is, as fun as TBDB can be it shouldn't rule your life......It is a diversion. There is definitely a place where you can gain a good deal of knowledge but at the end of the day it is an educational computer game at best.

Perfect... A great hang..but spend lots of time playing if you want to be a player.:D

P.S. This discussion needed to take place. Maybe there is some way to create a firewall between the BG and the DB sides so that people don't get lost and post in the wrong forum! Maybe?:D

Bongomania, first of all, you responded to everyone who pissed you off, but not to me, who offered, sincerly, to buy you a beer. Look for the good, man.

Second, that's a good looking dog you've got there.

Finally, yeah, we get frustrated with EBG players who pop over and post because most of them don't get or try to get us. Once a month, we get "hey how do you guys live without DR Strings for your standups? They are the shiznit! Let's start a petition." or in response to someone experiencing amplifaction issues for their jazz trio gig "I can push 1,600 watts through my Ampeg SVT with 2 4x10 cabs and itz off da hook! IMO, you have to have at least 1,000 watts to play live". It's just annoying and quite irrelivant. Those people misrepresent the community of EBGists as thoroughly as our trolls do of us.

The fact is that many...maybe most of us...are or were EBG players too. I thought it would be "the same" to play doublebass and after struggling through the transition, I know that it is not. It's worth it and I'm thankful for those who have and continue to help me. There is a way to come into this community and a way not to and you'll get different responses depending on your approach. I know that there are fine musicians that play EBG and many of them successfully transiton into both our forum and our real world community.

Which is the more important point. TBDB aside, when I started aspiring to be a legitimate jazz doublebassist, I had to start dealing with people who already were doing so professionally in my town. There is a right and a wrong way to do so. People are people wherever you go. You are responsible for 1/2 of that relationship.

If you really want to learn to play DB, forget about us and find Dave Captein. He is a super nice guy and a great player and teacher in Portland. Not only he, but his students continue to impress and amaze me.

<some other ramblings that didn't survive the edit process, because I just don't feel like pushing this any futher. peace, yo>

Truth is, a small group of players here dominate this forum. When things get tough, this group always back each other up with a measure of facts and BS. This is MY opinion.

My perception has kept me from making any financial commitment to this group........I dearly love our instrument, and it is a shame that such a small group of players have damaged the growth potential for this business venture.

I hear you laughing.

PW drove alot of potential DB participants out of here. In MY opinion, the drugs and disappointments ***** up his life and perspective. Lots of posts full of raging and tantrums, that go with the substance withdrawal process. I think he is probably a really nice guy........I hope to meet him someday. I hope that if he really decides to exit this time, he finds happiness in his new endeavors.

Bongo made some good points, as painful as they look in print.

I heard a some cats who were no-ear mother****ers before, but....

I hear ya, but then you never know who the young lions are going to turn out to be before kittie puberty. I bet that little guy ends up hearing just fine.

AK - I heard you loud and clear, and your post was appreciated as far as I'm concerned.

I think one of the problems with the "Council of Elders" set-up that we have right now, is that the same 7-10 people can't help everyone on the board. Its great that these people try and I respect that they do, but if you want to take on that persona you have to be willing to say the same things over and over again. How many times do you think guys like Paul, Ed, Chris, Ken, Marcus or any of the other working bassists have had to ask a new pianist to use less left hand, or had to work with the sound guy to get the settings that they already know work great. People have to approach each person as a student that is a lump of clay. You have to be able to help the be molded into something beautiful. You can't expect that they already know something.
Alternatively it could work that people could chime in when they think there is an experience or some insight that they could offer. This way the burden of helping everyone wouldn't have to always fall on the same people.

I've seen this pop up several times in the thread, and I have to say as the OP of this thread.

I have never said I was loosing sleep over this forum, I mentioned clearing my conscience for me because I was being an *******.

I think it is big of you to apologize. I really do. Sorry if I'm reading too much into it. I just figured if you feel like you need to clear your conscious you might be taking it all a little too seriously. I've read most of your posts and I see nothing that warrants an apology let alone starting a thread for it.

Personally, and this is not at all directed at you, I think apologies are very overrated and overused in this culture. Like I tell my wife (and she hates when I say it) apologies are just words. If you are really sorry you change the behavior.
