Cool shots. Nice bass you bought, btw. I love the simple black look. IMO the fancy-topped look is on its way out visually and economically.

Question for you or anyone that knows :

- I see a lot of booths moved around this year. Some have said there wasn't much traffic. I expected the whole thing to be somewhat sombre this year, given the retail environment. Was it smaller and that's why it seems rearranged? Was there less people than in recent years?

- You got a pic of Allan Goldstein! That guy is awesome. Is that a Brubaker he's playing and do you know if he bought it? http://s322.photobucket.com/albums/nn401/Bassyc/NAMM 2009/?action=view&current=IMG_0802.jpg Last year he had a new Benaente he'd picked up at the show he was wandering around with. In another shot someone at the Schroeder booth is playing a Lull ... were they all neighbours or were people walking around with basses they hadn't purchased? Was LowEnd sharing a booth with Schroeder?

- did Schroeder have a new amp this year? Last year he had a preamp prototype, and I don't recognize the preamps in your pics ... hard to see them.

- any shots of the LEJ's or Benaventes?

- what are these basses? Invalid Link Removed Other than the Brubakers and that one LEJ you've photographed, this is the only other bass I thought looked good. Overkill, IMO, but at least it's kinda fresh.

That's a Brubaker fretless six. I know Jorg was going to have a Brubaker in his booth, don't know if that was it.

Brad, Jorg had one of the 5 string Brute's in his bay but told me that he purchased the 6 string fretless from Kevin.

You were so right about the Brute basses - they are sick! I'm still thinking about the 4 string I played today!!!

Guys, forget about basses. You're completely overlooking the awesomeness of Sesame Street being present at NAMM.

Yess....

is it just me or do the two basses in the front of this picture from NAMM look like new pedulla models?? it looks like a rapture body with soapbars and exotic woods?? or are my eyes playing tricks?!?? might just be some of Michael Pedulla's "Personal Creations," and not a new model, but either way they're gorgoeus...

Those first two are prototypes... I don't even think Mike has a name for them yet. I spoke to him about them. Currently, they're still not quite "there" is what he was saying, but wanted folks to play them and offer opinions. He had a third one back inside the booth in the corner. No, I didn't get a chance to play them, but almost. :)

Vic,

It was finally great to meet you in person!

Tom Bowlus,

Great meeting you at the Bass Bash last Friday! Jorg told me you stopped by the booth but I was out in a meeting so wasn't able to show you samples of the iGIG bags. I'll send you a PM about it.

I also met a lot of other guys from TB at the show and the Bass Bash. Great to put face on the TB handles. Thanks for stopping by the booth and for checking out iGIG bags.

I have posted pics on Facebook but I don't know how to share it to the public without having to logon to Facebook. I'll get it on my myspace page tomorrow.

Mike Lull:
NAMM2009035.jpg
I played the T-bird bass and the sunburst/rosewood J5 on the end up top, as well as a couple others. The burst T-bird is actually Mike's personal bass, but he was letting anyone check it out. Just like when I played Tom's vintage one at his house, I have to admit, I was impressed, great full passive tone, and in the case of the Lull, the headstock is much lighter, and the bass is sculpted more so it not only balances better, it also feels better. The J5 was just off the chain. OBP-3 preamp with single coils and a passive bypass. Killer. :)

The Nordy's are smokin'. I played both Kevin and Steve's basses as well as the new 34" scale 5'er - they all felt great. You guys are in for a treat. I am jealous!!
+1!

That new one with the one-piece neck, smaller radius, 34" scale, 70's wind pickups in the 60's position, and the new Nordy preamp, just RULED! :)

Mike Lull T-Bird - This is a cool bass. It says rock all the way and Mike has managed to capture all the good of the T-Bird while removing the neck dive and muddled tones. This bass balances perfectly and has great definition tonally.
+1 Definitely.

Fender Tony Franklin Fretless - Easily one of my favorites from the show. I kow these have been around for about a year but I had not played one before today. A great fretless, simple and fun to play.
Dude, did you check out the Steve Bailey 6's (fretted/fretless)? Man, they were GREAT! :)

Sadowsky - Well, the Will Lee model is an awesome bass...the mid switch really brings a new level of control to the Sadowsky electronics. Much better voiced for fingerstyle rather than slap, the mid boost is a cool feature. Great overall feel and you can't say anything bad about the Sadowsky quality - these are great basses. Also, it was my first chance to play the 24F 5 string and I really liked it.
Yeah, the WL was great, and the 500Hz "wide" setting is definitely my fave, and cool that you can also adjust the amount of boost without having to remove the cover (small hole in elex cover to access the trim pot). The 24F5 J bass seemed a little thin to me... had to boost the bass more on that one, but it did sound great. The PJ5 Metro was the biggest surprise for me in that booth. I expected to like it, but I REALLY liked it! :)

The Brubaker fretless 6 that Allan is playing was borrowed from Kevin by Jorg... Jorg wants that bass bad... But I don't think he took it home today. That was an awesome fretless... Wow! The other Brubaker was a Brute 5 that Jorg had both days I was there (maybe even for the whole show)... It was a really awesome bass, what impressed me most was that the single coil J neck pickup had a really fat P bass thump - obviously I was in P bass mode because of my new Lull.

And as far as your borrowing basses question, Jorg borrowed a few from LowEnd to try... I brought my new Lull over to the Schroeder booth to show it to Jorg, Ed & Miko (and in the pic TB'er Feelinlow). I hung out there a lot with Allan and others - so I left it there after I purchased it. I suppose lending instruments is common at NAMM, Mike told me he lent my bass to Phil Jones Bass just before I bought it.

Sorry but I didn't take pics at the LowEnd booth (why, I don't know)... It was a few booths down and I went over there a lot but no pics, sorry.... Brian had a ton of beauties there.

The Schroeder preamps are in production, I got to play through them all weekend and I can see one (a whole Schroeder setup actually) in my future.

Hey guys, i had an amazing time at the show, i just wish u could have met some of you guys. I now have to change my details according to TB commercial user policy...but to everyone in the bass world i did meet, thanks for being amazing!! - Gary Grainger, Kevin Walker, Jimmy Coppolo, Pavel, Kevin Brubaker, Jorg Schroeder, Daniel at Mono, Terrence Palmer, Mark Peric, and too many others to mention, it was an unreal time.

Thanks for answering my questions, guys.

Still just wondering what that metal structure (?) at the Brubaker booth is ... Brad?

Am I the only one who doesn't find all of these 5+ string boutique basses attractive in any way?

As an owner of a fancy-topped 6'er, I agree with you. Just to be safe I also have one that's all black.

The ones with the mish-mash of fancy woods and wild block inlays ... most I don't like, mostly because I don't think they actually "work" at all visually and these extras cost a lot but add nothing in terms of sound or playability.

Some I think look fantastic, that green Brubaker for example, but I wouldn't want to be taking them out of a case at a jam nor can my playing do justice after basically screaming "look at meeeee" by wearing such a thing onstage.

No knock on the guys that have 'em, and I totally respect the woodworking. They just ain't my taste so I'm with you on that.

What I got from actually being at NAMM is that while the really fancy basses look amazing when well-photographed on their own, when you see them in a real world setting they just look nuts ... like looking at John Lennon's car vs. actually driving it to get groceries. http://beatles.ncf.ca/rolls.html I stood in front of the Ritters last year and was very underwhelmed ... after awhile you just get numb to it all. Amazing artistry, unique visions, but it doesn't make me think "bass".

That's just me. I really dig the simple ones like Vic's sunburst F-bass or that black Lull p/j YCBass bought.

Speaking of Ritters, it would have been nice to see something more in-depth in the BGM interview in issue #1. The Ritter website doesn't address this, and I think it's because the actual story might not be as good as the presumption that the same one guy has the time and talent to come up with all those designs, actualize them, go to trade shows, deal with customers all over the globe, make wine, set gems, apply gold leaf, paint, machine unique bridges, make pickups ... anyone know the story there?
