Well demographically could be good marketing - those who owned real Tonkas back in the day could have the disposable income to drop on a set of these pedals - by the way, has anyone seen the street price?

Call me crazy, but the Markbass pedals remind me of styling of the Tonka trucks of my childhood.[/QUOTE]

Well aside from maybe the Zon stuff I haven't yet seen anything from this NAMM that quite blows me away like these Fodera basses do!

That's because Ken Lawrence wasn't there this year....

Be sure to check out the Brubaker booth if you go back today.

There are A LOT of builders that aren't there....and a few that rival the Fodera stuff for sure.

I have long been a fan of Ken's stuff, he's still a really underrated builder IMO and I hear he is a fine player too! I'm not much a fan of the Brubaker stuff, the body shape and the headstock shape turn me off completely and then there isn't much for me to go on!

I know there is plenty of awesome stuff to rival Fodera but their selection of NAMM basses could be one of their best batches in recent years I think.

I really do think that Ken is one of the greatest builders of bass guitars that there's been. A true artist.

As for Brubakers, it's always a personal thing as far as looks. I have a great apprecation for them myself. I think that finding something that works ergonomically, looks attractive, and with a design that sets it apart from other builders is much, much more difficult then people think it is. I personally think that Brubaker did this in spades. I'd be lying if I said that looks wasn't a factor in my buying a bass, but it certainly comes a distant third to the other two factors that I mentioned.

Anyhow, there are certainly some great builders out there....lots and lots of options these days.

I agree about Brubaker basses, I'm sure they play and sound great! But we are fortunate today that there are so many high quality basses around that we can have our tastes in looks, playability and tone all fulfilled to the highest order!

Nordstrand - Kevin - Steve, your basses are smokin'!!!

So, there was a lot to see today and thankfully the show was not crowded at all. There were some standouts...

The Nordy's are smokin'. I played both Kevin and Steve's basses as well as the new 34" scale 5'er - they all felt great. You guys are in for a treat. I am jealous!!

The LowEnd Om... Wow - what a surprise. This is a great bass, thin body, thin neck with the LEJ electronics made this a real slap monster. Very comfortable bass to play - as always, Brian and Chris turn out excellent work.

Mike Lull T-Bird - This is a cool bass. It says rock all the way and Mike has managed to capture all the good of the T-Bird while removing the neck dive and muddled tones. This bass balances perfectly and has great definition tonally.

Fender Tony Franklin Fretless - Easily one of my favorites from the show. I kow these have been around for about a year but I had not played one before today. A great fretless, simple and fun to play.

Brubaker Jazz and Brute - - Ok, these two were my favorites of the show. The Brute is easily the BEST bass in it's price point. Hell, it blows away basses that go for hundreds more. This is one to keep an eye on. This bass KICKS serious booty. Great for slap and fingerstyle. This was a surprise! I almost walked away with the white 4 string that Kevin had there.

Also, Kevin's Jazz bass is as good as it gets in the J-Bass world. If J-Bass lovers give these a chance this bass will become very popular. Great feel, excellent craftsmanship and tone, tone, tone!!

Sadowsky - Well, the Will Lee model is an awesome bass...the mid switch really brings a new level of control to the Sadowsky electronics. Much better voiced for fingerstyle rather than slap, the mid boost is a cool feature. Great overall feel and you can't say anything bad about the Sadowsky quality - these are great basses. Also, it was my first chance to play the 24F 5 string and I really liked it.

Schroeder Cabs - What can I say? Jorg's cabs are just getting better and better. The single 15 really stood out for me as did his front firing 10/12 cabs. Great stuff.

So, that's about it for my observations...feel free to ask any questions.

Cool shots. Nice bass you bought, btw. I love the simple black look. IMO the fancy-topped look is on its way out visually and economically.

Question for you or anyone that knows :

- I see a lot of booths moved around this year. Some have said there wasn't much traffic. I expected the whole thing to be somewhat sombre this year, given the retail environment. Was it smaller and that's why it seems rearranged? Was there less people than in recent years?

- You got a pic of Allan Goldstein! That guy is awesome. Is that a Brubaker he's playing and do you know if he bought it? http://s322.photobucket.com/albums/nn401/Bassyc/NAMM 2009/?action=view&current=IMG_0802.jpg Last year he had a new Benaente he'd picked up at the show he was wandering around with. In another shot someone at the Schroeder booth is playing a Lull ... were they all neighbours or were people walking around with basses they hadn't purchased? Was LowEnd sharing a booth with Schroeder?

- did Schroeder have a new amp this year? Last year he had a preamp prototype, and I don't recognize the preamps in your pics ... hard to see them.

- any shots of the LEJ's or Benaventes?

- what are these basses? Invalid Link Removed Other than the Brubakers and that one LEJ you've photographed, this is the only other bass I thought looked good. Overkill, IMO, but at least it's kinda fresh.

I was there today and there seemed to be less traffic than last year though Jorg Schroeder told me that Friday and Saturday were EXTREMELY busy!

The Brubaker that Alan is playing belongs to Jorg, and it is gorgeous in person! I played it for a bit...very nice...light weight and it sounded great.

LowEnd and Schroeder had seperate booths this year...

The Lull was purchased by YCBass at the show on Saturday.

Jorg's pre looks to be in production mode as he had a few there and they sounded great.

I didn't take too many pics this year...I think I have one that shows some of Brian's stuff.

I hope this helps...
