Thanks for the Warrior pic. That 4 string Buckeye is going to haunt me.

Nice to meet you too Vic... I went to the F-Bass booth but for some reason I thought you bought the natural/maple/pearl pg VF5... Anyway, I saw your sunburst one and loved it!
Nah, I played that one and it actually seemed a little "harsh" through the mids for my tastes. The burst/rw one was just perfect. Really nice prominent, yet smooth and sweet highs, great for both fingerstyle and slap... with the EQ FLAT! Nice rich lows and authoritative burp when you favored the bridge... and if you solo it and bump the lows, watch out! :D

Those SC's he's making are great pickups. I was really impressed by them. I personally liked them a lot better than his other pickups... even in SC mode! :)

Thanks for answering my questions, guys.

Still just wondering what that metal structure (?) at the Brubaker booth is ... Brad?

As an owner of a fancy-topped 6'er, I agree with you. Just to be safe I also have one that's all black.

The ones with the mish-mash of fancy woods and wild block inlays ... most I don't like, mostly because I don't think they actually "work" at all visually and these extras cost a lot but add nothing in terms of sound or playability.

Some I think look fantastic, that green Brubaker for example, but I wouldn't want to be taking them out of a case at a jam nor can my playing do justice after basically screaming "look at meeeee" by wearing such a thing onstage.

No knock on the guys that have 'em, and I totally respect the woodworking. They just ain't my taste so I'm with you on that.

That's just me. I really dig the simple ones like Vic's sunburst F-bass or that black Lull p/j YCBass bought.

I kind of agree with you there. I have a boutique bass with fancy woods (as seen in my avatar), but its rather simple (not boring, but elegant). I play in an indie rock band and basically play with a super P. I've had fancier basses before, and as much as I loved my crazy walnut topped Skjold 5, I can't see it being just a huge fit with my music, lookswise.

That said, if I was a fusion or an R&B player, I wouldn't have too much trouble bringing something like a Fodera or Fancy Skjold in. But for the most part I don't care what people play, as long as it sounds musically correct for that particular band.

John Merrick may refer to:

* John Merrick (insurance) (1859–1919), African American founder of North Carolina Mutual and Provident Insurance Company in Durham, North Carolina
* John Merrick (actor) (born c. 1940s), British-born actor
* John Merrick (golfer), Long Beach native. 2007 rookie on the PGA tour. 2003 Pac 10 medalist

John Merrick may also refer to:

* Joseph Merrick (1862–1890), the Elephant Man; early biographies inaccurately give his first name as "John"

In fiction:

* John Merrick (Baum), Uncle John of the Aunt Jane's Nieces series by L. Frank Baum, a wealthy canning magnate and brother to Aunt Jane.

A small complaint:

My only access to internet is through my and my wifes business computer. So the title may set off some bells unintentially.

I am not a prude, but the title doesn't work for the workplace.

The Brubaker fretless 6 that Allan is playing was borrowed from Kevin by Jorg... Jorg wants that bass bad... But I don't think he took it home today. That was an awesome fretless... Wow! The other Brubaker was a Brute 5 that Jorg had both days I was there (maybe even for the whole show)... It was a really awesome bass, what impressed me most was that the single coil J neck pickup had a really fat P bass thump - obviously I was in P bass mode because of my new Lull.

And as far as your borrowing basses question, Jorg borrowed a few from LowEnd to try... The Lull was at the Schroeder booth because that was our home base for the show - I was helping Ed & Miko with the iGiG bags which shared a booth with Schroeder, I hung out there a lot with Allan and other - so I left it there after I purchased it. I suppose lending instruments is common at NAMM, Mike told me he lent my bass to Phil Jones Bass just before I bought it.

Sorry but I didn't take pics at the LowEnd booth (why, I don't know)... It was a few booths down and I went over there a lot but no pics, sorry.... Brian had a ton of beauties there.

The Schroeder preamps are in production, I got to play through them all weekend and I can see one (a whole Schroeder setup actually) in my future.

Yohann! You are the man!!! Thanks for all the support at NAMM. Always a pleasure hanging out with you.

Your PJ5 is killin! Talk and see ya soon!

What I got from actually being at NAMM is that while the really fancy basses look amazing when well-photographed on their own, when you see them in a real world setting they just look nuts ... like looking at John Lennon's car vs. actually driving it to get groceries. http://beatles.ncf.ca/rolls.html I stood in front of the Ritters last year and was very underwhelmed ... after awhile you just get numb to it all. Amazing artistry, unique visions, but it doesn't make me think "bass".

That's just me. I really dig the simple ones like Vic's sunburst F-bass or that black Lull p/j YCBass bought.

Speaking of Ritters, it would have been nice to see something more in-depth in the BGM interview in issue #1. The Ritter website doesn't address this, and I think it's because the actual story might not be as good as the presumption that the same one guy has the time and talent to come up with all those designs, actualize them, go to trade shows, deal with customers all over the globe, make wine, set gems, apply gold leaf, paint, machine unique bridges, make pickups ... anyone know the story there?

that was next door at lace technologies, some kind of caravan / trailer thing.
