If you want a vintage-like bass, forget the Am Pro, and compare an Am Vintage to a Nash. My guitar player has a Nash Tele, and it's a fantastic guitar.I played an Am. Vintage Fender, and it was fantastic as well.

Nash or Fender P-Bass?

I like Labella Low Tension Flexible Flats.Thanks for the advice. I think your decisive response has pushed me over the edge to go for the nash.
For classic warm, thumpy p-bass, what strings do you recommend?
Easy on the fingers and the bass and sound great!
IMO, the tendency to ascribe “more snap” to ash bodied p-basses is at least partly due to, (1) the way the 70’s P pickups sounded vs the 60s basses, as well as, (2) the much more prolific maple fingerboards of 70s basses. I’ve had ash and alder bodied P-basses, and while I’ve not done a true A/B, I really don’t believe that the body wood is the discriminating factor.
I have to say, this is an awesome forum! So much very helpful feedback and advice. As I said, I'm new to the world of bass but have been a guitar player for many years. Could it be bass players are just nicer than guitar players? ;-)
I agree. The neck and pickups have greater impact, IMHO.
And, honestly, no 2 pieces of wood sound exactly the same. I have 3 alder bodied P Basses. 2 w/maple boards, 1 rosewood and they all sound a bit different. There's no denying they all sound like P basses but they are distinct.

I owned a Nash bass long before they were commanding the premium prices that they now do. IMO, they've outstripped their true value. At that price, you can get your hands on a used Lull or Lakland which blow both Nash and Fender out of the water. The Nash just isn't worth the premium over Fender. Find the bass that speaks to you when you play it and save yourself some $$$.
Good choice! I just picked up a PB63 last month - mine has the Jazz profile neck, love it. I'm using TI Flats. The Lollar pickups are top notch. Looking forward to the pics. At the risk of hijacking the thread but I've noticed several folks mention they like flat wounds. Are they the string of choice for the classic 60's-70's warm thumpy p-bass tone?
