NBD - 50's style precision with a metal flake refin

Have to admit, I looked at this expecting to hate it and instead I fell in love. That's gorgeous.

He likes the look, but it was a lot of work and learning on his end. My belief is he will go back to it, but needs a sabbatical.

The last time I painted a bass (second one, third?...?), I told myself, "never again! No chance!" Now I am thinking about it again.

I bought this bass quite a while ago, with the sole purpose of it being refinished by a young man from my church. He is gifted and hard working and is planning to attend Luthier school this fall. He has been refinishing guitars for a while and does a great job. I wanted large metal flake and he wanted to give it a go.

In all honesty, he hated doing the large metal flake and says he might just stick to more standard refinishing. That being said, I like the finished product! Pickguard arrived today so I snapped some pictures.

WOW! Freaking GORGEOUS!!

If this doesn't take us too far off-topic, how does she sound? I recently picked up a new MIJ '51 reissue and I think it is the best sounding bass I own, including my 2 US Fenders. So I'm curious about the Squier iteration.

Like every TB'er, when I got it I said I'd swap out for a "better" pickup. But after giving it some proper strings (Dunlop super bright nps), I'm loving it. Great tone, amazing with a pick. This is my favorite version of a p-bass. I like a single coil in that spot.

I need to tinker with pickup height though. The E string is a bit more dominant than the rest.

If he could find the patience for that kind of finish, he could probably make a pretty good living doing mostly that. Stellar job. Great looking bass.

I think it came down to time/benefit. He is getting some traction amongst guitarists doing relic finishes, which he is very good at. They are also a faster, less labor intensive process. I think he'll go at metal flake again, but this one kind of took it out of him.

Marty Bell has some new competition. Awesome finish!

Marty Bell recently retired - I hope the young man was paid accordingly - he did a very nice finish and I totally understand why he wouldn't do another like it. Sparkle finishes are not easy, require special equipment and are shop messy done correctly.

His dad is a commercial airline pilot and a good acquaintance. He told me he finds metal flakes in his carry-on frequently. They simply get everywhere.
