NBD - 50's style precision with a metal flake refin

As an aside, back in the 1990s I came across a 1959 P bass that had been stripped to not-so-great looking bare wood. I'd always wanted a Candy Apple Red Precision, and so had John Bolin of Bolin guitars refinish it.

Here it is with the original pickguard. Look at the groove in the PG under the finger rest where the original owner's finger dug in!

But I think I like your refinish better! (Usually this bass wears a white mother-of-pearl pickguard.)

I usually don't like pickguards on 51 style P basses but that looks great.


But I'd still like to see pics without the guard.

Played and sounded great today. Something about a SCPB. With a pick and light grit.... Hard to beat.

I'm talking with him now about a refin of my bass vi.

I bought this bass quite a while ago, with the sole purpose of it being refinished by a young man from my church. He is gifted and hard working and is planning to attend Luthier school this fall. He has been refinishing guitars for a while and does a great job. I wanted large metal flake and he wanted to give it a go.

In all honesty, he hated doing the large metal flake and says he might just stick to more standard refinishing. That being said, I like the finished product! Pickguard arrived today so I snapped some pictures.

There are many bands, especially country/honkytonk, that would hire you just to have that bass on their stage. I'm serious. That guy's got a future in finishing, for sure.

I was thinking the same thing. He may want to learn how to love the large flake! Wow!

He likes the look, but it was a lot of work and learning on his end. My belief is he will go back to it, but needs a sabbatical.
