NBD- a vintage mutt

It sounds like it may be the original body (somewhat modded...). The Precision Special had active electronics.

There is an allen head screw in the center of where the strings are attached. I believe that is where you adjust the spring tension. I have had a few kahlers, I have a couple now. That being said, I don't use them much; every once in awhile they can be fun, but a little goes a long way.

Sweet Bass. I always wanted one of those. I think they came in Lake Placid Blue too.

Seems that the current location of the output jack is where there used to be a mini toggle, passive/active switch.

Nothing I have found indicates a term option. That said, the model that followed this, the Elite, had a big honkin fixed bridge made by Kahler w/ fender logo. So there was eventually a business relationship there. Maybe it started w/ the special.

Might've been a custom order even.

I vote that it's the original body...probably sripped down when the kahler was installed.

I bought a mutt '79 P-Bass, stripped with a Kahler, a few years ago. Had a local tech take out that obnoxious, hefty hunk o' metal and patch the route, then put on a regular bent-metal bridge. Now it sets up great and sounds like a P-Bass should. Not a fan of the Kahler at all.

It's definitely gonna be a fun project to restore it. Probably won't repaint the body, though. I kinda dig it the way it looks now.

I would love to replace that bridge but I'm not willing to throw $300 into it. Gonna clean it up the best I can and play it.

I got it as a player, the worn out vibe is just a bonus.

Today I'm gonna attempt to clean it and set it up with new strings. I'd save the flats but they're cut too short anyway. Only about one wrap around each tuner. Explains the E jumping out of the nut slot.

Even if I wasn't going to use the trem, I'd leave the Kahler in, it's a very massive bridge, and in that locked down position, ought to have really good mechanical / vibrational coupling with the body.
