NBD: Custom Stambaugh 30" 5-string

My new bass, built by Chris Stambaugh, arrived today. I asked for a lot of unusual features and he delivered 100%. It's definitely one-of-a-kind and I'm thrilled with how it turned out.

Specs
30" scale, 24 frets
Tuned EADGC (with a D-tuner to put the lowest string to D)
Aero pickups
Ghost piezo saddles
Pope Flexcore Preamp
Bartolini buffer on the piezo

Controls
Volume (push/pull active/passive control)
Blend
Stacked treble/bass
Stacked low mid/high mid
Top two switches are 3-way toggles for each pickup, allowing it to run in series, parallel, or single coil.
Passive tone knob
Piezo volume knob
3-way switch for magnetic / magnetic+piezo / piezo-only output

First Impressions
The 30" scale feels fantastic. Having both arthritis and tendon damage I just can't stretch my left hand like I used to. It's so much easier to grab chords and make big stretches, I think it will be a lot easier on my hands.

There are so many possible tones to pull out of this instrument I don't even know where to begin. Running the magnetic pickups with some low end boost and a slight tone roll-off sounds fat and thumpy, though the bass has a natural upper mid tone that wants to cut and bite. However, the piezo buffer keeps it from becoming overly shrill or unmusical.

It's going to take a lot of time to figure out how to best utilize the controls and what settings are best for different situations. There's a lot of subtle depth, especially in the pickup toggles. I can't even guess what my go-to starting settings will be, there's just too much to explore!

As for the looks, the photos speak for themselves. This thing is just gorgeous. There's incredible detail at every level, from the figuring in the flamed maple within the neck inlay to the classy binding around the headstock. I asked for a bass that would turn heads and get attention. I think this will do just that.

Chris is a great guy, easy to work with, and after building two basses for me (14 years apart) I'd absolutely call him again if I ever need another instrument made. He's a true artist.

Wow, that looks great.
I have an Ibanez SRC6, 30" 6, and would love something similar to what you have there as it would fit right in between the Bass VI class and 34" 6s but the wider spacing would possibly help with some things. Plus, though I love the SRC6, it's nowhere near that great looking, or a NT.

Once you get the hang of it, I'd love to hear some clips.

Congrats on your new bass. Not many NDBs make me covetous.

PS: Does that beautiful inlay represent something in particular?

Thank you! Right now I have a hand injury (left-hand tendon damage) so I'll hold off on clips until I can actually play something worth sharing, but hopefully it will heal and then I'll record some clips to share.

The inlay isn't anything specific. I had an idea for a kind of helix/ribbon concept and we just traded some sketches back and forth. I've always been such a fan of Chris's inlay work, I wanted to take advantage and show off what he is capable of.

From the wood to the inlay I really just gave him some general concepts and a few photos of basses I thought looked pretty and told him to go to town and do whatever he thought would make it look cool. :)

Chris Stambaugh's work has always looked impressive but this really takes it to the next level as far as visual grandeur goes! The inlay, the quality of the wood and that gorgeous clearcoat! Just wow!

On another point, I hope it allows you to make great music and play to your heart's content. Hopefully the shorter scale length will help with that.

That's some stunning wood work and design you've got there and congrats to both of you for the inlay concept and the beautiful execution of it. From the description of the pickups and controls, you've got a mountain of possible sonic options to play with.

I hope it gives you everything you hoped for.

i've seen stambaugh basses with insane inlays before..

looks like he's the best in the business to me.

that is exactly what a custom order should be. it's beautiful, functional, and a unique design. the high C string with a hipshot D tuner is endlessly logical. 30" scale well done... looks perfect.

enjoy the bass!!
