Not sure exactly why, but I do remember reading an article in Bass Player Magazine about Fender's research and development trying to win the public back with the new American Standard series. They went all out imo.
This is Sonic Blue ... they were only offered in this color from '95-97, and this would have been one of the last ones made, as it dates to March of '97 ... Beautiful bass, thanks for posting pics, and enjoy!!

Here's a good pic for reference showing the difference between Sonic Blue and Daphne Blue. Unless they've changed the shade of Sonic Blue, the guitar in the original post is definitely not it. Sonic Blue is about as pale blue as you can get.
In any case, its up to OP if he wishes to pursue the original color ... lighting for pictures, even the color pickguard on an instrument can change the perceived tint or tone of a color .. age has a big affect of course, and this is a 17 year old instrument last month ... all he needs to do is get in touch with Fender and they will clear it up for him ... it comes down to what was offered on the AmStands in the period the bass was made, Sonic blue was offered (as noted above), Daphne was not ... its still beautiful and in amazing condition ...
Edit to add: ... I should add that I remember the Sonic Blue Fender was using back in the early-mid 70's did seem much 'softer', but then I am not sure I should trust my memory from the late teens either ..

I actually don't like those tuners (I have a 96, btw, with those tuners) just based on the way the posts look sticking out of the headstock. I much prefer the older Fender tuners. The color rocks, though!
