NBD! Extremely special Peavey T-40!

I think it's the coolest T40 I've ever seen. At one point I thought about making a similar rear rout body, as I loathe pickguards but I seldom play 4s any more so we'll see if that comes off. The RHPAW (ridden hard, put away wet)* T40 needs a bit of fretwork and maybe a refret and a phase switch so I was going to make a new neck, then a body and hopefully find a set of pickups to make my own 'new' T40, and sell the other two, including the pretty one. If I find a set of toasters in the NY (when I have some spare pesos), I think it might just.
* According to the widow of the original owner, he played it for hours every day, practicing or gigging for 30y, but apart from fretwear and some corrosion on the bridge, there's a small spot on the body above the neck PU where his thumb sat, but you won't really see it more than 5' away.
what I love about this is that it says 80’s T-40 when the ones from the late 70’s I’ve had felt heavier! I guess they haven’t found a way to weigh something that heavy yet!!

Mine doesn't have a dot so I assume it's the first of the last of the run. Another thing that's neat is the pin stripe around the truss adjustment. Chip Todd told me they almost immedately stopped doing this because the people on the line said it was a major slowup laying it out. Apparently they did it by hand.
It’s amazing how much of a bad rap the T-40 gets for weight and yet a USA Fender Jazz Standard is every bit just as heavy and no one cries or rants about it.
If you don't mind me asking, what got you into collecting T-40s? My uncle has had one since they got released and I had a chance to play it over the weekend and I was surprised at all of the tones you can get out of these basses so I can understand if that's your reasoning.

yeah totally, I honestly don’t understand how it’s always one of the first things that gets said! They’re well balanced and you can use a wide padded strap if you’re struggling!
well, as far as I can remember I just saw one online one day and thought “that’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen” so I bought a black one… then another black one came up but from the year I was born so I bought that and sold the other. I bought a white one and used to take those 2 to gigs… I absolutely love the feel of them, the attention to detail, the massively over engineered aspects of the design and tone circuit, even the cases! I also love the story behind them and that era of Peavey in general.
Weirdly though, after getting a pretty hefty collection together, I was looking through old photos at my mums house and saw this pic of her old band. Look at what the bassist is playing! I guess as a kid I saw it and subconsciously was like “that’s what a bass is”
I agree. I have six basses that I love and kinda play in a rotation, but it's mostly for just a half dozen songs on a Sunday morning for worship. My '78 T-40 is in that rotation. It's the heaviest of all, and for that brief 25 minutes or so I have no problem with it. I have a beautiful, wide custom-made leather strap I use with the T-40--one that actually came with the bass when I acquired it. Admittedly though, I've been a bit scared to try it for a 4-hour dance gig, especially since I have five lighter options. I love my T-40 and plan on continuing to play it, but I wouldn't mind at all if it was about a pound lighter.
That is a dream come true for sure. I hope it gets played and recorded and doesn't just sit in a case or hang on a wall...

EXcellent! I'm completely draft when it comes to the differences between T40 releases. How does this one differ in feel and sound? I'd take almost any of em though..never owned one sadly...thnx for sharing!
What a beauty. It looks so clean.
I have one of the original brown lining shotgun cases with my t-40. I was shocked when I found one with the case.
